Well, after several weeks of calls a person finally called me back. Pleasant fellow, had a 15 minute or so chat, and unfortunately the verdict is that the converters that came from the donor vehicle must be in the same location from said vehicle. No moving things before the converter. After...
Yeah I'm going have to take a day and talk to someone, I thought enough of these swaps have been done that someone would have the intel, but from what I see it kinda depends on who you talk to from the state. The swap itself I have no issues with, it was just can the pipe in front of the...
Thanks to all, who replied. Yes I’d like to talk to a referee in person, that would be easiest, but that’s an hour drive to the nearest one I can find. I don’t know if smog stations actually have the info, they just pass/fail stuff and a swap in Cali requires a waiver/plaque of compliance to be...
I did avtually start at that site. Have placed several calls to a ref but no one has called back unfortunately. None of the stations are close enough for a quick visit else I’d just stop by and ask in person.
I know it’s old but still rings true when I’m trying to do something, I haven’t decided yet, either a 5.3 out of something or a 5.7 vortec from a 97 or so truck. I know that 5.7 would be old architecture, but I have 2 boats and a a chevelle with small blocks in them, so have extra stuff, I can...
I looked through the engine swap threads but didn’t see much in the way of exhaust. For the California folks, where did you stick the converter/conveters? What can be modified in the piping, I haven’t been able to get a hold of a referee at a smog center to find out where I can place them or if...
I bought mine with a rod hangine out the bottom of the pan. I paid 500 for an engine out of a wrecked cruiser with 136K on the clock. Toss in another 1500, because the engine was on a stand, and why not do the head, timing chain, all the hoses, gaskets, upgrade the alternator, etc. I figured...
You also need the Toyobd reader tool.
I think I may have misunderstood how that tool reads timing, I think it reads the before tdc as a negative number, is that correct?
That’s why I was asking, I don’t know how it’s supposed to act. I just find it odd that the timing would be retarded at idle. Must be an emission thing.
Looking at your video with the TOYOBD reader, is it normal for the timing to be that low when it's cold? -7 or -8? Seems like it should be higher. I'm asking, I don't know what the mapping is on one of these engines. Has the timing been verified, I couldn't find if it was in the thread.
Maybe it was part of one of those breathalyzer kits they put in cars when people get a DUI, and when the time was finished or it was sold it was permanently enabled with that black key looking part. (No I am not speaking from experience)
Did you get the torque converter fully seated? I know you said it clicked 3 times but thats all I can think of that will jam an engine up in the manner you are describing. I've left engines sitting for years and as long as the intake and exaust weren't filling up with rain or overly exposed...
It took me a few tries to get the converter seated when I replaced my engine, I put in the trans and spun it while holding the center part and pushing back. When I say spun, I didn't just turn it while pushing, I gave it a good heave-ho so it was spinning, it stopped when it was all the way...
