I took my BJ42 to some cruiser specialists (L1 Automotive in Loveland) to have them diagnose an oil leak(s). Their diagnosis is that the tappet cover is leaking. I was told this is just below the valve cover.
Looking at the engine repair manual, I see no mention of a tappet cover or anything...
Resurrecting this thread to add my two cents as I just had seriously tough time getting the pitman arm off the gearbox on my BJ42 (presumably same as FJ40).
First try: got free loaner puller from NAPA, thing with two arms and a screw in the middle. I had sprayed PB blaster on it a week before...
Just put 'em in! It wasn't much trouble at all and probably took me an hour all told. The most time consuming part was just gently removing the front door panels (and especially window crank). I didn't both taking the doors off and laying them flat. I don't think it would have saved me any time...
Yeah, a fella with a 3B in Denver told me yesterday that his starts no problem at 14k. There is definitely an underlying cause for my issue that wasn't the altitude, or else she wouldn't still be idling high back at her home elevation. Yesterday my main objective was just to get her home -- now...
The mission was a success!!! The gal is now safe at home. Save a helluvalotta bird crap, she appears untouched. I chatted with Kraig and Robbie (local cruiser mechanic in Boulder) this afternoon, and Kraig showed me on some pieces of a different engine where to look for the EDIC arm and limit...
Actually, I think I may be set. Breckenridge is going to show me firsthand what I should try out this afternoon on a diagram of the engine compartment. Then a friend with a modern FJ is going to take me up this evening to give it a go. If that doesn't work out, I'll hit you up and see if it is...
I think BreckenridgeCruiser may be onto it. The over-rich hypothesis explains the high idle, the black smoke, and perhaps the reason changing the throttle makes no difference in the sound of it starting (I'm guessing that once the mixture is too rich, the sound will be the same whether it's a...
It is :/ I'll see if I can track down someone in the local Cruiser club tomorrow who might go up and take a shot at getting it started. If I can't find one, I'll start calling towing companies to see who has a tow truck that could get up there.
Well, I'm in a pickle. My BJ42 is at a trailhead in the mountains of Colorado, where it now refuses to start. And I think (though I hope I am wrong) that it is not just that I am stupid and can't start a diesel.
Here is the (lengthy) back story. Hopefully there will be some clues in here that...
I just bought a set of locks; front doors, rear doors, and gas door; from coolcruisers.com in Texas for $100 + $8 shipping ($50 for matched front set, $30 for rear, $20 for gas). I searched around for a while and it was the best deal I could find.
Pulled the lock cylinder out of the front door...
Good call! Especially since I hear beer is a scarcity in Utah. I'd be happy to bring my savior much beer from his brewery of choice in Colorado, where the beer runs in streams out of the mountains.
I'll be taking my "Green Machine" (1982 BJ42 LX) out to play in the Utah desert sometime in late November. I plan to install a new OME Dakar suspension from Cruiser Outfitters, but don't want to pay the $175 in shipping, so I'm thinking of picking it up and installing it from the shop in Utah...
Hi Ken, I'm just bumping this thread as I have the same question. My brother in law is letting me borrow his Aussie BJ42 for a few years to play in the mountains of Colorado, and I think it needs a new suspension. Currently little bumps like lips between the segments of concrete pavement are...
