Interesting.....thanks for the info! I've thought about replacing the stock exhaust manifold with a header. What brand did you go with? Also, do you no longer need a heat riser when you go with a header?
Thanks!!
Hi All! It's been quite a while since the last time I've posted to MUD. I've been lurking lots lately, and now have a question.
I have always had and issue with fuel percolation in my weber carb. Just some brief history: The previous owner of my '78 FJ40 had desmogged (kinda...sorta...)...
Hi all,
Just wanting to confirm something that I think I'm seeing. :-)
I have a 1978 FJ40 that has been de-smogged (at least it appears to have had the majority of the emmisions "stuff" ripped out at some point by the previous owner.) The PO installed a weber carb as well.
I've been...
update: I stuck a longer phillips head screw driver in the radiator drain tap and out came the antifreeze. It actually looked pretty clean... I guess I'll try and flush the system and hope for the best.
Question: do I need to take out the coolant drain plug in the block when I flush the...
Chase,
Good luck! Gimme a ring or shoot me an email if you need some assitance....or at least someone to stand around and drink beer. Glad to hear you are at the painting stage!

Wow... I replaced my thermostat a couple of months ago and thought I'd fixed my cooling issues. Last night, I took the 40 for a drive and noticed that it "felt" hot again. My temp gauge never moved, so I ordered a new temp sending unit from CCOT becuase I'm sure that the gauge is not reading...
treerootCO: Thanks for the laundry list of what not to try! I'll look for the golf tee. :) In a sick sort of way, I'm kind looking forward to it happening again so I can try the gas cap trick.
I think I'll run the alternator down to Autozone to have it checked just for giggles.
Update: I ran down to my buddy's house this morning to see if the Cruiser would run. I hopped in, it started right up and drove home without any problems at all....
zetasig: I'm in the Cincinnati area. I usually do some hunting near the Lancaster area in the fall, so I might look Jim C...
Newbie question for you Cruiser gods out there. A buddy of mine and I were out driving around in my 78 FJ40 for about 20 minutes or so and it was running like a champ. We got back to his place, drank a beer then I got back in the Cruiser to come home. When I tried to start it, it turned over...
Good point.... I think I need to find a "thinner" o-ring then. The one that shipped with the thermostat is preventing the case from sealing. Maybe I'll try to shave the ring down a little.
I'm going to flush the cooling system as soon as I have some time, so I'll just wait until then...
Sorry it took so long to update this....
I got the thermostat case to seal again. I had to remove the top o-ring that shipped with the new thermostat, but I guess that will only cause the LC to run a little cooler. (I may change my tone in winter when I can't get any heat!)
As for the...
I had a couple of hours to play with the Cruiser today and now one problem turns into another! I thought I'd replace the thermostat....quick and easy thing to rule out. The problem I'm having now is I can't get the thermostat cover to seal properly. I've been through 2 gaskets and some gasket...
Wow....this is a great list of things to try. I should have some time this weekend, so I'll keep you all posted.
Lusedekache: Funny you should mention temperature. The gauge never quite gets to the halfway point "C----|--------H", but it seems kinda hot to me. Also, the radiator is...
The good news: I got a new 40!! Found a 1978 that's in damn fine condition; one owner, 46,000 original miles, good top (has never been removed...this won't last long). I'm jumping outta my shoes!! :D Drives like a champ.
My question is this: Whenenver I shut the engine off after it's been...
Hey all,
I'm still fighting some brake problems on my 1974 FJ40. I've decided that I'm going to replace all of the brake lines and hoses and am looking for some advice as to where to get them. I have already replaced all of the lines from the rear axle brake hose back, but need to now do...
