    That makes sense. FJ60 2Fs could (and did) burn exhaust valves just two years after it was brand new with less than 40,000 miles on the odometer. (My did).     If you lightly press on the transfer shift lever when it’s making that noise while driving and the noise goes away, then maybe it’s just the shifter linkage rattling. There’s a rubber bushing or two in the linkage. Maybe it dissolved.

    Only way to find the queen is open up the hive. Aka - transfer case needs to be opened up and inspected.
