Thanks, FJBen.
I also just wonder whether it's a good idea to pull the back door-tops. I had a closer look and I m not sure the seals would undo and go back on easily. Summer in Germany also isn't all dry, too. I actually dream of a softtop, but my ministry of treasures says No right now. Maybe...
Seriously. That worse?
I have my BJ73 for a year know and plan to take off the hardtop for the first time this summer season.
A) to have it more handy to replace window seals and roof trim
B) FOR THE FUN as 4x4 opportunities are scarce here in Germany I need to get a different fun factor out of...
Completed on rebuilding the brakes:
Calipers taken apart, cleaned and rebuild with new seals and boots.
Rear brakes new shoes, wheel cylinders and drums.
All 6 hoses replaced.
LSPV cleaned and adjusted.
I also learned something:
When taking the LSPV out, or when replacing the one hose, which is...
Congratulations on that anniversary! Great pics. I have been looking at your posts earlier. A bit jealous as you are not only driving a great rig, but also can do this in an obviously great area, and you are lucky your rig is sturdy and could cover 27kkm.
Please keep on posting nice pics for us...
Rebuild both front brake calipers and replaced the brake hoses. WiIl also put new brake fluid, of course.
This job was well overdue. The PO just sprayed the calipers to make them look nice. Brake fluid hadn't been changed for a long time.
The boots on the left where ok though, but the ones on...
Hi. Welcome.
Not sure wether your steering shaft is similar to mine. Mine is a single piece. Male and female thread are at the ends, with the slit and the clamps on. That is what I refer to: Prone to rust, thus take apart, treat with rust protection (wax or grease, threads and entire tube) and...
On my BJ73 there are greasing nipples on some of the joints. Give it a few pumps with the grease gun until etc squeezes out from the boot.
The actually tie rod ends are sealed. As long the boot is intact, those just need a regular check for wear. Important: Jack up the wheels from the ground to...
A sunny day since quite a while.
Took BJ for a round trip to some local castles and monasteries near Cologne. Northrhine Westphalia is one of the densest populatedf federal states in Germany. Every gathering of more than 3 trees is apparently protected as a nature reserve. No offroading at all...
Hi all
I'm due for the knuckle job on my BJ73.
Can anybody please advice on the amount of grease needed per knuckle / side?
Thank you.
Best regards Ralf
Hi
The Engine dying after a min can have several reasons, especially when cold. My 3B has a choke (a wheel to turn to increase idle. some people are not even aware of that). If not properly set, mine also dies after a min when cold or the slighted attempt to accelerate or go in gear.
The blowby...
Good point. The engine isn't that powerful.
This is also a short wheel base. You will find pretty rare space in the back. Not much space to store gear unless you take out the back seat. But the roof can bear a roof tent (which ist difficult with the hard tops of the 73s, like mine).
Wow. That's a price they ask...
Remember: 4x4 need to be inspected from the bottom. Carefully check underneath...
I wouldn't trust the milage stated. Pretty low for the age.
Check windshield frame, wheel arches and panels behind the wheels. If no rust there, there is a chance to be OK in less...
Thank you for the thread and pics. Makes my African bug crawl.
Have been in SA several times with an NGO in the late 90s and early 200x. Have been all over the country. Was last in Mbombela in 2007. Jesus, time flies.
Would be a dream to travel SA in such lovely vehicles.
We had VW microbus. The...

I constructed some aids to limit the mess..
You need to disconnect the return line and block the respective reservoir outlet. I used some 8mm PVC tube that I heated and molded on one end.
The return pipe comes from the bottom, so this copper...
:nailbiting:10 & 11 Rear plate, spring and rear housing
Two new O rings go on the rear plate. One sits inside in the nipple on the back.
Place the rear plate on top, adjusting to the pins. Place the spring on top, centered.
Lube the inner of the rear housing with ATF, in particular the...
