I'm planning on heading to Gordy's hill (near Socorro) with few other wheelers this Saturday for a day of tooling around. Weather.com says the temps will be in the 60's and sunny in Socorro.

The plan is to meet up with the group at Subway on Gibson at 7:45 and depart by 8am for Lemitar (exit#156). Bring a lunch and snacks along with your kids and pets.

Let me know if anyone wants to go play for the day.

I wish I could make it. This is one of my favorite places.

Here's the crew from last week. I took them through the same trails that we ran last time out.

I don't have any pics of tjpowers stock TJ because every time I would get through a difficult part of the trail and go back to take pics he had already made it through. I tried to make him back up an do it again for photo ops but he wasn't going for it.

Keep in mind there are a lot of trails out there. From mild to wild, there is something for everyone.

nice pics, thanks. I'd like to explore this area as much as possible. It's a decent area to play and not too far away from ABQ. Until the temps get really hot, I think the club ought to head out there as much as possible. It'd be nice to find some decent camping spots in that vast play area.

There is a BLM site called the Socorro Nature Area near Lemitar. I'm planning to go there with my Scout Troop at the end of March. It has a shelter, grill, amphitheater, nature trail, pond, and vault toilet. I don't know what the fee is for non-educational groups but it's free for the Scouts to use.

There is also San Lorenzo Canyon to the North West of Lemitar. No facilities but very cool. Like a tiny Grand Canyon.

Now THAT looks like nice place to camp, provided no impending rain storm!

San Lorenzo Canyon is very cool. I hiked in it many times when I was at school in Socorro. Some highlights of my visits were finding a bee hive in a rock crevice and coming across a rattlesnake sunning himself.

There are camp sites at Escondido lake along with free camping on BLM land near the trails. I'm willing to camp anywhere I can park my 5th wheel.

That's not camping. That's just dragging a mobile home further away from town.

Danm straight. All the creature comforts of home right at my fingertips

Escondido Lake!! Did you take your boat?

Calling that place lake is a big exaggeration, kind like how every drainage in NM (even the dry ones) are called rivers.

There are fish there. I don't recall it ever being good though.

Anyone going wheeling tomorrow?

I would go but I'm using spring maintenance as my excuse this week.

Try to get some trail maps from one of the locals.
NaeSLaS is the NMTORC President and has said that he has some official maps of the area, I've tried to hook up with him but it hasn't worked out yet. His name is Sean

It was a great day to play outside and make new friends.

So glad I swapped my MTs for this ride as those rocks are not kind to ATs.

A big thank you to Richard, Matt & Misty for showing us around and babysitting us! We had 13 rigs but one had a busted knuckle due to having too much fun while driving in the wash. His steering knuckle hit a rock and lost the battle. I wish I knew his userid/name but NaeSLaS (Sean) peeled off the group and went into town with the XJ driver to get parts. I'm still not sure of the names and userid's so please correct me where I'm wrong!

Nice XJ with the busted knuckle shortly after we left the staging area. He hit a rock with the steering knuckle at a good clip.
