Wanted: 1970's FJ40

Hi all:

As you know, I made a series of changes to my life recently. I moved, bought a newer Cruiser (03) and sold both of my older ones (70 and 89). Well, it turns out that the sale of the 1970 FJ40 is a decision I am having some regrets over. So, I am on the hunt for another FJ40, this time looking for a later model that'd be a good daily driver.

2F motor, 4 speed, as close to stock as possible. I'll keep a poker face about my budget, but I'll cough up some cash if I find a nice one. I also have an '05 Yamaha Kodiak 4x4 ATV that I bought brand new, I'm the only owner, and today it has VERY low hours on it, that I'd either sell for cash to help me buy the FJ40 or put up as a trade or partial trade.

Please PM me if you have something for sale or know of something for sale.

Your friend, Rigger, now in Sheridan, WY

Yeesh, guys! By now, I was hoping for a list of about a dozen FJ40's that I could look through!

:frown:

I tried to buy a new Land Cruiser in 79, the Toy dealer in Helena could not find one, tried to get me to take a new mini truck, the LC's were like 10 to 12 K just for comparison I bought a new ford half ton for 7K. they told me then that Toyota had reduced their imports of the cruiser so no 79 for me. Might be hard to find I know there are several in Lewistown newer than 78, might be tough to talk them out of it, that is why I always end up with the early 70's cruisers. I'll look for some you never know, cheers, Larry

You know there was one at a scrap yard by lame deer MT, guy said he wanted to "fix it up" even a politician like me could not get it away from him, but as Paul told me time is our friend, paraphasing or course.

Interesting. So even in the late 70's the Cruisers were starting to get scarce.

Been doing a lot of looking. Man there's a lot of trashed out Cruisers out there!

I'm expanding my criteria a bit. Anything in the 1970's; early to late.

I'd love to have something with original paint and original running gear. Not wild about V8 conversions. (Anyone have one? How are they to drive?)

Hi guys:

Still looking around. I think I'm getting a little clarity on what I am after, so here is my revised "wish list":

Original paint. My ideal rig would have factory original paint.

Original mechanicals. I'm not after a heavily-modified truck. Springovers and V-8's are not for me. And, for some odd reason, I am really fond of three speed column shifters!

Completeness. I'd like one that is all there. A rig with the top and doors missing would have to have some other strong points to make up for the missing parts.

Minimal rust. :)

As Larry states, the early 1970's models are more plentiful than others. So, I'll hopefully find one of those.

***

On the other hand, I'd consider a half-baked project, a half-done resto, a couple of parts trucks, or other situation if the price is right. I have a bit more storage room at my place here in Wyoming, than the house we had in Montana.

***

I have access to a car hauler, and am willing to go 500 (or more) miles to bring the right one home.

***

I sure appreciate any help. And feel free to kick me for selling the one I had. Yeesh, I'm an idiot!

I'm getting ready to move to Texas and actually want to sell mine.

It's a 72 with a SBC 350and a 700r4 transmission. Stock 3 speed t/case. About a 3 1/2 inch lift on 33s. Got fj60 disc brakes up front(asin hubs) with stock drums in the rear. Tuffy console, roll cage. Hard top. Fuel tank is in the rear poking through the rear floor.... Needs to be redone. Aussie locker in the rear. Optima red top. Saginaw power steering. Custom gauges. Custom rock sliders. Flow kooler high flow water pump. Color is stock Toyota red. Only rust is in the rocker panels.... Pretty easy to replace.

It does need work before you could drive it. - There's four bolts that hold the adapter to the transmission on and two are stripped out on the bottom causing the tranny to leak. Those would need to be fixed before you drive it. Plus you would have to fab up a new tranny crossmember to support it. - needs a new power steering pump the one that's in it squeals pretty bad non stop. - it would also need a fan shroud, it gets a little warm in the summer. I have a brand new mechanical fan with a brand new thermostat ready to go in, you would just have to build a shroud.

Other than that she's a solid rig. It's treated me well but I have neglected it in the last year or so.

A solid two days in the shop and it would be more reliable than ever. Looking for $6000.

FJnew; thanks for the offer, but your truck is not what I'm looking for.

Ad on craigslist for an 83 in Billings for 4K nice looking must be fraud no contact info in the ad, another fraud ad as well but nice trailer added search land cruiser in Billings CL

Definitely a fraud. There's actually two of them up now on Billings CL. Both fraudulent. I've seen those ads in MT, NV, CA, NM, SD, CO, etc. They are everywhere. I responded to one ad asked for more pictures. I actually got a reply! They claimed that they could not send me any pictures because the truck "was already crated and ready for shipment"!! But they assured me that it was still for sale, it was "really nice", and they just wanted to get rid of it!

Have you found a cruiser yet? I have a 1977 FJ40. I love it but my daughter is turning 16 and I will be buying her a car soon. I am thinking of selling, and may be interested in your trade offer. Call me or get me an email and I will send pictures. I am on Facebook as well and have pics there. Dan Morano 406-799-5192

I am bumping my thread today. I'm still looking for a '40 to buy. I will clarify and update my criteria a little:

I am keeping my Kodiak ATV - it is my snow clearing machine.

I'm okay with an FJ40 with F or 2F, 3 speed or 4 speed.

I really want factory original paint, if I can get it.

I can't travel too far to fetch it, unless it was REALLY special. If the '40 was in MT, WY, ND, SD, ID or CO, that'd be great.

If you see something or know of something, please PM me.

Thank you kindly,

Rigger

Larry, have you seen it in person? looks like lots of overspray inside and under the hood. I was thinking that's been overpriced since it first listed last summer.
Paul

it is overpriced I think it had 8K but I would say 4 to 4.5 K if it all runs good the paint looks like garage stuff but the body work isn't to bad, I didn't hear it run just crawled over the fence to have a look.

Are you looking for a top notch fj40? It's my buddies but he wants close to $12,000.00 for it. It's in St Ignatius.

$12k is a bit over my budget, but I'd sure like to see some pics. Do you have a link to it?
