K, need to bump this. Going through the same thing as the op and need options... Mines not a spud shaft, it appears to be welded to the steering shaft. Any thoughts on how I can ditch the 3/4 yoke and convert this to the 13/16? I'd prefer not to replace from the column down if I don't...

Is the volume on the iPod or droid at 100%? That could be the issue. Try setting the volume at 85% or 90%. Mine distorted at full volume when I was using a tape adapter, but sounded fine when I turned down the iPod a little.
