    For Sale 1976 FJ40 in CO: $8500

mp_cude, Your kidding, right? Showing that it can get dirty is a bad thing? Really? (It all cleaned off btw. The fifth picture is after all that muddin'.) Anyway, I can understand having a mint-looking ride helps to sell it, but it's a 33yo 4by... it's meant to get dirty (and it does it very...

Fuel boiling, smelling gas... what to try first?

The smell is definitely from the carb. I can hear it bubbling there too. I'm not sure about the pressure when removing the cap, though. It's possible and I just didn't pay attention. I'll have to check that. It definitely runs fine. I don't have any problems running. Also cold-starting is...

Fuel boiling, smelling gas... what to try first?

Grant, Can you help me understand how I'd diagnose this? I can take some closer-up pictures, but I'm not really sure what I need to look for. What exactly is the heat riser? (there I go... showing my uber-newbie-ness. *grin*) Ya know, the previous owner never said anything about fuel vapors...

Fuel boiling, smelling gas... what to try first?

Next step: insulator Well, I finally got around to moving the fuel intake line to the carb. Apparently that wasn't it. The line now runs pretty cool but I can still smell gas vapors. I should have figured it wasn't the line, but it was an easy step to rule out. So the next step, I suppose, is...

Howdy all! Got an FJ40 hard top question...

Well, that way when you take the top off in the summer, the weather stripping stays with the top, not the tub, so your summer cruisin' doesn't include wear/exposure to the stripping. Of course, since I'm using $5 Walmart special sticky foam, it doesn't really matter either way. -Danimal

Howdy all! Got an FJ40 hard top question...

Shieldsy, I'm putting my hard top on this week as well (first time for me as I just got the rig this summer). One thing I remember from my '72 from 15+ years ago is that I'd get a thin strip of foam weatherstrip from the local hardware store and run it along the edge of the tub where the top...

    OME Dakars are awesome!!!!!!!!!!!

Interesting... Can you share how much $$ you plunked down for this? I just got a '76 and I'm not sure what suspension it has but it is horribly stiff. I'm slowly investigating options to soften it and it sounds like what you did might be just the thing for me. Thanks, -Danimal

Fuel boiling, smelling gas... what to try first?

Pictures? Brian, THANK YOU! for all this detail. I'll need to read through it a few times to really grasp all the options. One thing seems clear to me: Among other options (of which there are clearly quite a few), I should consider rerouting the fuel line to the carb. I have two follow-up...

Fuel boiling, smelling gas... what to try first?

Ed, is that a generic insulator or would it be specific to the carb I have (I'm assuming the latter). -Danimal

Fuel boiling, smelling gas... what to try first?

Do you guys think it's more likely the fuel filter is what's getting too hot vs. the rubber lines? I.e. if I just moved the fuel filter but kept the lines as-is? Or is it better to just do both at the same time: move filter & switch to steel? I like the idea of figuring where the heat is...

    TLC's for Dummies?

Thanks! Yeah, I guess maybe what I need is a good overall resource for vehicle maintenance to understand all the ins-and-outs in general, and then use resources like this forum and the FSMs and such for TLCS specifically. Maybe an "Auto Repair for Dummies" wouldn't be a bad start (if there is...

Fuel boiling, smelling gas... what to try first?

Can anyone help me with this? I have a weber carb and just had the fuel line and filter replaced. After driving for a bit then turning the cruiser off, I can hear bubbling and boiling sounds right around the carb and can smell gas fumes. I don't see any gas dripping, though. I did some...
