It's been a loooong time since my last post... but the Beast still lives. Here's a video we made about the build:
A few new things in the works we will share in the upcoming weeks...
Thank you all for the comments! Sorry this thread hasn't been updated in a while, we have been focused on our adventures in the 4Runner for now and will be adding a Turtleback Trailer to the mix soon as well. The troopy is our long-term project and will always be a part of the family.
We now...
Thanks Tim. I'm taking my time and developing a detailed build plan for the next couple of phases now. Once my job situation shakes out I hope to move forward again soon!

It's kinda hard to tell from my pictures but I basically routed all three hoses to my firewall where I installed a tee so that the water pump output and return line to the block meet and go up to the heater input side of...
There are only a few wires to be connected; Battery power, ignition, tach (digital or analog lead), 3 separate engine grounds (for electronics) and two leads to the fuel pump of choice. Very easy electrical installation. The rest of the engine harness clips into two jacks on the ECM and fans out...
I would say I have roughly 11K in the build. You can do it for less depending on what parts you decide on. For example; the electric fan setup with controller set me back quite a bit more than a mechanical fan with clutch would. I also installed a Dakota digital gauge cluster to keep an eye on...
Of all the parts that I bought, those hoses were the only ones I really doubted. The reviews were mixed and I was expecting them to be a struggle to keep from leaking. I only intended them to be a quick and easy (but expensive) way to get on the road while I continued my search for pre-bent...
At the request of MUD member: rockclimbr I have populated a spreadsheet detailing out most of the parts required for this particular engine along with prices, links, and important comments. I hope it will help others who are considering this build as well.
Here is the link...
Welcome to the forum! It's nice to see another Troopy represented on MUD!
I'm jealous of your 7 month trip, do you have a blog or facebook page where you're documenting your travels?
P.S. I would like to see some interior pics of your rig as well since I'm currently working on my expedition...
Thanks! Glad you like her!
That's the crawl control via the ABS system. It sounds weird when not under load due to the fluctuation of the calipers. She just engaged it a bit too early on the incline. It's taking some getting used to but super nice on long hills.
No updates on the Troopy of...
Lizard Skin arrived from Summit yesterday so I'll start stripping the interior and firewall soon. It's a stress relief to know I have another offroad rig ready to go this weekend... so I can take my time!
Took Momma Bear out to try the 4WD bells and whistles on the 4Runner last night. She's...
Oh and David, good call on taking off the pin stripping. ;) One day I will give her a thorough massage and proper paint job. Until then; it's flat tan rattle can!
Thanks!
David,
Yes, I had to go to a pure electric fan setup since the new adapter kit pushed the engine forward too far and my big ol' 19 x 26 radiator was a mouth full for the bay. I found a trick fan controller from Ron Francis that is pretty impressive. It will start up one fan at a pre-set temp...
