Edit: Once I did the brake trick, I didn't need to keep my foot on the brake or anything, it must have triggered something, and the car worked almost normally.

I registered just to say that I had the instrument cluster die also. Mine is a manual diesel HZJ105 (Aus). Brake lights weren't working either. Looking around with a multimeter, I noticed the alternator wasnt putting out anything. Strangely enough, the car started and ran perfectly. What was...
