I called McMahon too, and he was very friendly, but it must have been me, lol, because he referred me on to another shop. Trollhole would be great but quite a transport.
I may be flying out to do my own wrenching. Bummer huh?
This is interesting: I called and identified the vehicle, and was quickly told they "won't be taking this on." "It's a little too old for us."
Alright, thank you.
Hi guys. I'm out in San Diego. My son is here with me. Our (his, lol) 80 series is in Swannanoa, neighboring Asheville.

I'm in the east county at 4,ooo' in the mountains. We're particularly hearty, 80 Series driving, types. The problem is when all the Flatlanders on the coast look up at the mountains and decide they need to play in the snow for the first time in their lives. This weekend it'll be serious gridlock...

Update: I'm impressed. The rig sat for well over a week, and it's been cold. Started it up this morning with a careful ear: no indication whatsoever of cam chain tensioner allowing any rattle/slack.
So, try dino oil, as spec'd, and a small filter and let's hear your experience.
This is simply an FYI, not an oil thread or an argument. You may want to experiment if you're interested.
I've been running Mobil 0W-40 for a number of years, and in various vehicles. On my '93 1FZ-FE I'd started noticing start-up rattle (cam chain) that lasted one or two seconds. I was also...
That's good info, and similar to my experience. Mine felt nice, without much increased breakout force at 30lb/ft. They still turned fairly easily at 50 lb/ft, but I played with them a few turns and then backed torque off all the way, and then back up to 30 before securing it.
