Insight into an HJ61 for the long term

I’ve had my 61 for over 10years, yep you can get it to ride ok I have old man emu springs etc. But I don’t think they are really that good for daily use. I have a company car so my cruiser only gets used when I need to tow or use 4wd, so only gets used perhaps once a week on average. Safety is a...

    A to Z Steering shimmy on 60

I had a problem with dodgy steering and vibration / pulling to one side under light to medium braking. Under Hard braking truck steered straight with no vibration. I changed worn TREs, checked brakes and discs, no play anywhere, no play in wheelbearings, no movement could be found in Swivel...

HJ owners, I need some measurments please.

On my HJ61 the crank is about 275mm from the chassis and about level with the top. Air con compressor is about 120 dia and the bracket spacing front to rear is 90, top to bottom is 130. The bracket is a tricky thing, with clearance for the outlets on top and the alternator underneath...

    Our first HJ61!

There is no sensor that stops a 12HT if it happens to get low oil pressure, don't be worried though, the oil pressure gauges generally always read low, as long as you have some oil it will be fine.

    1HDT performance queries

You should easily get up to 150kph reasonably quickly, if it's blowing black smoke and low powered you probably have no turbo pressure? Or perhaps an air leak, can you hear a hissing sound? Check the pipes from turbo to inlet manifold! In Full time 4wd when 1 wheel slips you stop, use the centre...

HJ61 Charging troubleshooting and ideas needed

If it is externally regulated, some circuits require the instrument panel charge bulb to be working to allow the regulator to do its thing, probably a good idea to check the charge bulb is not blown. I've never seen an externally regulated HJ61.

81 full float rear hub rebuild question

The axle should easily slip all the way in, if you had to force it in by tightening the axle studs then it must be jamming on something. Perhaps the seal has been dragged in on the shaft and is jamming it? Or the outer part of the wheel bearing locknut is jamming against the back face of the axle?

Air vs Cable vs Electric Lockers

Air lockers are probably the way to go, unlikely to leak if setup and installed well, fast acting, just hit the switch. Electric motors down on the axles don't seem like a good idea to me, they do work well but I have seen some with broken wires and a motor that was rusted and seized due to...

    Roof gutter rack weight capacity

600lb is no problem for driving on normal roads, I've had over twice that weight on my rack, but it is a beefy one. Off road is another thing entirely the vibrations and stress from corragations will eventually crack something. Another thing to think about is how much rust might be lurking...

    HJ61 Engine Fuse Work Around?

I would guess the fault might be in the glow screen, you can stop the screen getting power by unplugging the big relay that switches it on, should be easy to find just trace the wire back, I think it's the most likely fault and worth a try...
