PCV valve was clagged, hoses into the throttle body were disgusting. All replaced, including hoses. Also did an engine flush and oil change. Has improved about 70%. Thanks everyone for the advice so far...

Noticed that there is a fair amount of gunk under the oil filler cap, so I am going to do a flush of the engine too. After a bit of digging around on the net I found this interesting pdf file about PCV valves (I wanted to know what was inside them and how they worked, not just what they did)...

My cruiser does exactly the same thing... but only when its low on fuel (absolutely zero in the sub tank, and almost at the point where the fuel light comes on continuosly in the main). I thought it was the stater motor area too (exact symptoms), but when I fill her up, she starts fine. Hard to...

Rainy Day FZJ, After all that, did it solve the problem (valve seals etc)? Like the idea of the glove. Could modify it to give an appropriate hand signal too... hehehe

In my original post, I was just relaying what information I had come across in my search for the answer. I was going to start with the PCV this weekend (and all of the hoses). A couple of good ideas there. Thank you. I was also wondering if valve stem seal often "let go" in these trucks...
