H150F rebuild and enhancement - and everything else along the way (dropping the gearbox, doing the clutch, etc)

@Jackjack I have started my own spreadsheet which includes parts I will be using while getting prices for my own H151 rebuild. I can share mine if you like? It seems the No 1 hub and strainer can be ordered from Dave at Japan 4x4, just waiting on final pricing.

H150F rebuild and enhancement - and everything else along the way (dropping the gearbox, doing the clutch, etc)

Some great tech tips in this thread @DivByZero I am currently chasing parts for my H151 gearbox build and ordering a new sleeve which can only be the later version as mentioned above (from a H150, VDJ79 gearbox) The No1 hub is NLA from Amayama and wondering if the later No1 hub from the same...

    Turbo 15B 80/40

Poor old girl has been sitting out in the weather with a cover on her and the bare metal was starting to rust more than l would have liked. So pulled the roof to try and clean it up and spray some paint on it. Found that under the rear window panel had rusted up as well so attacked it with the...

    Turbo 15B 80/40

The main reason l decided to go for the H series gearbox. I keep hearing that H55 parts are hard to come by. I can ask him, let me know what the radiator is from and l’m sure if it’s available he will know. As we were looking at the pile of radiator brackets he was rattling off what vehicles...

    Turbo 15B 80/40

So after a clean l checked the gear ratios and found it to be a H150 with the lower 4.5:1 gear ratios. So now l have a spare cluster shaft for this box, winning🍻 I think this will go behind the 15B turbo. I have a spare lower 5th so if it revs too high l can convert the gearbox or possibly go...

    Turbo 15B 80/40

Also caught up with my good mate Mark who runs a radiator shop. He mentioned he had a radiator mounting bracket for a 40 series l could have. So after digging through a pile of brackets and mounts l dug up 2 brackets. After chatting about the best radiator to run he remembered he had a custom...

    Turbo 15B 80/40

Fully stripped my H151 down and found for the most part to be pretty good. Going to replace all the bearings and synchros at a minimum. Found someone selling a 2nd hand 5th gear and complete cluster shaft from a H150. The cluster shaft won’t fit this box but the 5th gear is the same so was a...

    Diesel engine swap 3B

So l have a H41 4 speed BJ42 and want to fit a H55 l should look for the same year box to swap over the input shaft? I have been looking for a cheap one to rebuild. Mine is an 82 so assume that l need an early H55 5 speed. Why can't l use a later 5speed?

    Diesel engine swap 3B

@Richco the H55 came behind the 3B as well as the 1HZ but not sure if those input shafts are the same. 2H and 2F H55 use the same gearbox input shafts course spline but 3B has a fine spline. 1PZ is pretty much a 5cylinder 1HZ from what l have seen. you could check part numbers of both to see if...

    Diesel engine swap 3B

The L series engine (2.2L) will be too small for the cruiser, they were slow in the hilux that had them fitted. The gearbox behind the L series looks like an early 5 speed hilux box and transfer. 3B is a better option but still slow, look for a H55 5 speed to go behind it or a later 4 speed.

    14B Engine Mounts

I can confirm that the 15BF l'm fitting to my 80 series chassis has the engine mount brackets at 50 degrees. The old 80 series chassis mounts were at 40 degrees which was the 1FZ petrol. I cut and changed them to be at 50 degrees.

    Turbo 15B 80/40

Saw some doors and parts advertised locally so thought l would go for a look. Ended up with two doors and a rear ute cab wall. The doors are pretty good for rust with only one needing the bottom fixed but they do have some bending and dents in the lower sections. The rear wall is a lot cleaner...

    HJ47

Finally organised my brother to come over and finish off the FJ45 aka The Beast. Got the clutch hydraulics done, brake hard lines made and fitted the last of the flex brake hoses he got. Fired her up and the clutch works and the gearbox shifts quite nice. Fitted the fuel tank and some new fuel...

Builds Olive the 71 FJ40 build

After some pics from a mate with a 71 l changed the route to the original spot. Had to remove the dash vent to put it in the brackets. Looks a bit better higher up in the dash. Replaced the brake light switch with a spare. Changed the position on the ammeter wires as they seem to rub on the...
