compressor clutch, would i need a new compressor or can you replace the clutch itself?

whenever i turn on my a/c it is making a screaming/schreeching noise. it last for only a few seconds and goes away. on long trips with the a/c on it will do it every now then while driving as well....sounds like a belt to me, but need to know the cause....any ideas??????
