your problem is the range selector is either out of adjustment or needs to be replaced, I have delt with this before and believe me your problem is in the range selector/neutral saftey switch/reverse light switch.

did you inspect those birfields good before you used them and did you pack some fresh grease into them before you put them in.

no real problem, biggest issue is disconnecting the wiring harness, the plugs can only plug in to their respective ports.

replace the cap.
