Thanks for the info! Good catch on the PF bumperettes -- yes, I'm from Alabama (Huntsville area). Took a job in Memphis in September. I'll check out Cottonland.
Yesterday, headed West on Poplar Pike in Germantown around 1:15 or so. Built white '97 CE, appeared to have 35's, MetalTech sliders, ARB bull bar, winch, rear bumper/tire carrier, Rhino-lined or Durabak'd rockers/fenders. Anybody on the forum?
Sorry to hear about your cruiser. (One less Desert Dune 97 CE -- I thought I felt a disturbance in the force this morning.) But also glad to hear you're okay, as that is far more important. Thanksgiving, indeed!
Here is another little FYI.
The axle housing may be smaller externally, but the axle designs are extremely similar (at least on the fronts) and I can't tell any difference in the size of the axle shafts and birfs, after rebuilding the front axles on my 80 and both (W460) Gs.
Doug, thanks for the chuckles! Classic.
I've become a left-foot-braker in the 80, even on the road. Keeps the left leg calibrated for off road braking use and I feel the pedal arrangement in the 80 is conducive to it.
I don't. :meh:
BTW, as far as who was first on the scene with the hardware, Mercedes' G-wagen had coil suspension, clearance for 33's, and solid front & rear axles with dual selectable diff locks available since its debut in 1979. The lockers became standard equipment in 1985.
Apologies for...
That was the OME 851/860 spring combo (2.5" lift, medium load) pictured. I had some stinkbug due to being lightly loaded.
From what I've read on here, you should be OK on these tires and stock springs. I haven't actually done it though.
I have my off-road tires (see sig) mounted on a set of these. They have slightly more backspacing than the FZJ80 wheels. 4 5/8" IIRC? Mine take the washer style lug nuts. But I don't remember what year 4Runner mine came off of, if that matters.
Center caps won't fit on the 80, as they are...
Now you're talking.
I love my 80 but it really is a little large for some situations. Narrow shelf roads, tight switchbacks and tight wooded trails come to mind.
I've never had a Jeep, don't frequent Jeep boards but I have to think our counterparts are on their forums somewhere bragging about...
FWIW, I had my exhaust bobbed by about a foot, which meant losing the resonator, but I haven't missed it. As far as I can tell, the only thing the resonator did was to mute a mild whistle under acceleration.
I'll admit I did not do a search on this. Do I have a CO problem? I don't know...
I agree, having towed a few cars with the 80, using rental car-hauler trailers. I was slightly over the 5000-lb tow rating each time and it was always a handful. :steer: From my experience, I wouldn't bother trying to haul 1.5 x Max rated load, even with upgrades to the rig. And you're...
I like mine but I do have some stinkbug...I believe this is why the 850/860 combo is popular, for a more level stance.
Even fully loaded for a wheeling trip, I still had some rake. But I don't have a lot of heavy accessories. (Yet :D)
