As you gently push the speaker cone inward do you hear/fell rubbing? That'll sure do it. If they sound as bad as you say, I'd replace the cone edge suspension while ensuring that there's no rubbing in the voice coil at the magnet.

I just did the test and got 13. I've been driving both city and highway and don't feel the need to go above the full Comfort setting. I'm really amazed at the difference. I'll never wait so long again.
