Back in the late 70's I bought a 4 pol GM starter from Man a Free. For the next ten years that starter worked great. Last time I used it was when the engine blew 100 miles east of Indio and I used it to pull my FJ40 and a loaded 16 foot travel trailer off I-10 a half mile up a slight incline...
Many a time that I walked around the front of my Toy and barked my shins on the front bumper.
Finally cut the ends off.
A friend of mine bought a new travel trailer with louver windows on the side front corners right at head height.
I made the comment that if my trailer had them I would most...
I was in two wheel going out but engage the fronts up the hill.
I try to use higher gears in ice and taking off.
Low gears and you tend to spin wheels.
Going downhill, Get religion and pray.
Once again use higher gears and stay off the brake as much as possible.
If you do start to slide don't...
Had to go to the store yesterday to get some more soda and snacks to sit out the storm.
It was something like -1.
The first two pics are my half mile driveway.
The next two are the top of the steep hill on the paved road.
The last one is three vehicles at the bottom of the hill on my way back...
Around 1985 my wife drove our 40 to town with a friend.
On the way home the hood flew up.
She said she was doing about 40mph.
Put a small ding on the left side of the hood some crack lines on the front of the roof.
Best guess is someone lifted the hood for a look or just an a hole in general...
The parking brake drum leaked lube for years so on occasion while traveling the fluid level would get low.
I always figured that had something to do with the whine from the T case.
Finally put in a speedy sleave and fixed the leak.
Took some pipe insulation and trimmed it to fit over the gear...
Finally got the transmission, transfer case, differential and rear axel bearings done. Took me a week and a half to do what used to only take two or three days. I'm gettin old so I hope I did it all right because I don't know if I can do it again.
Update:
Took my Toy out for first drive...
The reason I was asking is when I did the engine swap back in 1984 I took measurements and wrote them down but over the years the notes have been lost.
At the time of the conversion I was under money and time constraints.
I was using my Fj40 to pull my travel trailer to art shows.
The old six...
Even the old bumper jacks were not safe. Heard many stories about them popping out or falling sideways from improper use.
The stock bottle jack or a good equivalent is best.
If lift height is a concern, maybe a couple of short pieces of 2x6 or 12 screwed together with grain at right angle for...
Pulled the drive shaft cleaned and installed new U joints and still the same vibration.
Took the shaft to one place and not to go into it just say he was an idiot and pissed me off so am looking for another driveshaft place to try.
Weird story about U-joints.
Back in the mid 60's my first car...
I have vibration that gets pretty noticeable around 60mph.
It feels like it is in the back.
Steering is solid and no vibs in steering wheel.
Had this before I put new tires on and balanced.
I checked the drive shaft and found about twenty thousands run out on the barrel and the yoke is so...
An approximately three foot length heater or garden hose can also help locate the sound.
Make sure everything is in neutral and wheels are chalked before crawling under vehicle running or not.
Keep fingers away from moving fan blades.
Saw a guy lose a finger that way.
Yes I made it. I have made most of my living over forty years making and selling miniatures.
Imagine what the frustration is to drop one of the parts on the floor.
I like to take a few day off every once in a while to go tinker on my 40 so I can drop larger things.
I pulled the rear driveshaft...
