shim this you may need to shim the pinion bearing or the carrier so the ring and pinion gears have more tooth engagement i've got the same issue and a bit of a ping when i engage the clutch. I plan on getting a third from the yard and polishing it up before swapping it in.

I had a similar problem with a mazda i had. After a lot of agony i traced it down to the ignition mudule, a little piece of wonderful electronic gadgetry contained in the distributor housing. a trip to the junk yard and no more quiting. Your distributor most likely has one as well.
