The two general parameters are time and mileage - time results in deterioration due to exposure to the elements (sunlight, ozone, salt, etc.) and mileage is physical wear and tear from use.

Put the front on jack stands and check the LCA and sway bar link bushings for cracking when the suspension is dropped out.
