Realtime 80 help/advice needed (1 Viewer)

My little bro lives outside Talequah, Ok so I am not there to eyeball this so I am passing it on as it was passed to me.
Appearantly the front pinion seal blew when he was on a highway trip. He initially didnt notice any odd noises but noticed the fluid when he stopped for fuel. He topped off the diff and drove another 60 miles to his house. Emptied out again by time he got home. He then replaced the pinion seal. started to notice a whine. took it to a shop to get the pinion backlash adjusted. Still whining. kept getting worse, now really bad. The mechanic said he expected the whine to subside as the gears resettled? Now he (the mechanic) thinks the diff gears are toast from the time spent running without fluid.

My 2 Q's
1. Does this sound right for toasting the gears?
2. Anyone have a line on a used unlocked 80 stock third member?

I would guess that it is not the gears as much as the pinion bearing and carrier bearings.

so what is the cheaper option, finding a used 3rd. or R&R the bearings?

Bearings are around $100 I think. Used 3rd, Around the same price? I don't know. Don't have one though.

x2, although no telling how hot the gears got. A used third is pretty much a roll of the dice, I'd just get the bearings if ti were me. I may have my old gears lying around if he finds he needs him.

Well I've got a set of 4:11's in the attic ( I think)..if he needs gears ( I'm not sure if it's front or rear though.

I talked to my brudda this morning. Definitely the gears. Mechanic said it looked like the gears had been imporperly set at some point in semi far past. Brudda said there is a a deep wear pattern to the gears. Last time the pumkin was worked on was by Toyota. Warranty work on a leaking pumpkin seal at around 75K. Just food for thought. Either way he should be back on the road and fighting crime next week.

Great news- I found both sets! I'll have them at work tomorrow, I can also hand them off at the meeting- LMK....
