Happy New Year to everyone!

As some of you know I am starting to build new OEM wiring harnesses for the early FJ40's and 45's. It's slow going for the FJ45's due to the total lack of reliable documentation and no examples of harnesses that are in unmolested shape. A good example of this? I have 4 rear chassis harnesses, none of which are complete/accurate enough to use for a template to build new ones!

No one local has a FJ45 of any flavor so I can't just go measure things myself. :D

I know electrically what the harnesses are supposed to have and how they are actually wired. What I'm lacking on a current job is the proper measurements.

So... I need the help of MUD members to make this fly...

Here, in no particular order, are some questions for you 63-67 FJ45 SWB/LWB experts:

1. Do all 63-67 FJ45 LWB trucks have the amber/red tailights in the bumper and all SWB trucks have the round tail lights like the FJ40's? Besides PO mods are there any exceptions to this? Any models I'm not aware of?

2. Why did Toyota wire a reverse light to the trailer socket but not supply a reverse light for the truck? Is this some oddball Japanese thing?

3. For the amber/red light buckets: What is the length of the wiring pigtail on the light? Does anyone have a close-up pic of an unmolested OEM light bucket showing the wires and any protective coverings, anchors? I found a couple of pics from owensexport but they are not detailed enough.

4. Are the amber/red light buckets supposed to be mirror images of each other?
Refer to the pic and tell me if that is how they are supposed to be mounted? Seems the right one is upside down. ;) Trivial I know, but better to ask and be thought a fool than do it wrong and remove all doubt...

Measurements (See Pic 2)

For the LWB harness: I need three measurements:

1.The distance between where the gas tank sending unit wires split off the harness to where the split for the passengers side tail light is.

2. From where the passenger side tail light wires split to the end of the harness.

3. The length of wire from the passenger side tail light split to the end of the split where it plugs into the light. In other words how much wire sticks out past the main harness to the light plug? (On a SWB this distance is 24"'s)

I can't help with your early model questions but I have a pretty much unmolested harness from my 78 LWB. The PO only added a two way radio and cassette deck.

I do have a question for you though - but I'll go back to my thread and reply to your post in my thread as it pertains to my truck.

There were at least two versions of the SWB taillight layout. Some had them mounted to the outboard corners roughly midway up the bed. You may have seen an example of that in some pics that Dukes posted of a '45SWB he was selling.

Others (like mine) have round taillights mounted to either end of the rear bumper, like this:

Ah! THAT explains the differences in two of the harnesses I have! They were identical except for the lengths of the tail light wires.

I started sorting through your harness yesterday, I see why you were getting frustrated with it. ;)

That difference in the rear lead length is probably pretty small, eh? Here's an example of that difference and the trucks in this pic belonged to WDukes. I think he's since sold at least one of them.

I am starting the resto on my 65 45lwb. I can send you the harness if it will help out any. Just need it back at some point. Looks to be unmolested so far. Keep up the good work!!!!

Coolerman---sorry I haven't been able to reply sooner but as the old saying goes been running around like a chicken........

I have a couple LWB laying around and only one appears to be somewhat unmolested. I will will include a couple photos of the wiring. Also I will include a photo of a SWB with a reverse light--unsure as to whether it is stock or not---but looks close. I will try and crawl under one of the trucks in the morning to get you measurements of the wiring coming out of the taillight buckets for the LWB. I will also pull the lenses off a couple to see if in fact they are a mirror image of each other. I currently have several 45's both LWB and SWB at my shop so if you need something else let me know and I will see what I can find.

For the LWB rear light buckets the wiring pigtail is about 7 1/2 inches long including connectors.

The LWB tail lights are mirror images, except the drivers side light housing has an opening to allow the license plate to be lit up.

Hopefully I will address your following questions correctly---answers are of course in RED --these are in-frame measurements without the wiring harness pulled tight. I also included a crude drawing.

"For the LWB harness: I need three measurements:

1.The distance between where the gas tank sending unit wires split off the harness to where the split for the passengers side tail light is.
90 inches

2. From where the passenger side tail light wires split to the end of the harness.
44 inches

3. The length of wire from the passenger side tail light split to the end of the split where it plugs into the light. In other words how much wire sticks out past the main harness to the light plug? (On a SWB this distance is 24"'s)"

12 inches

On the early OEM lenses the orange area would fade out giving it a clear appearance. They are supposed to be red/orange in color.

Hmmm so Killer Peas newly cad plated light buckets are not a matched set? Imagine that, a 43 year old truck with mismatched parts. :D No big deal, they will function fine and are hidden behind the lens.

Bikerso, thank you yet again, I think I now have all the information needed to build a correctly dimensioned Rear chassis harness! That will allow me to finish up Killer Peas wiring job.

Just so you all can be envious, he will have a repaired and re-taped cowl harness with a few additions, a new bib harness, a new windshield wiper harness, a new rear chassis harness with reverse light and trailer harness added and with all Weather-Pak connectors. See pic below.

I also built him a new 1964/65 FJ40 harness and repaired his old one....

Where did you find the weather pack fittings? I was just looking in Waytek wire catalogue and saw some w/non nylon shrink connectors.

Looks good Mark!! I'm still stumped on the Taillight buckets. According to everyone's info...my truck had 2 left side buckets, one with the license plate light cutout and one without. Not sure where the taillight without the license cutout would come from. Either way, they look nice:)
