My motor:
OM603.960 from an '87 MB 300D, 157K miles on it.
This is the 2996 cc (3.0L) turbo 6, 148HP and 201 ft. lbs. of torque.

I bought it from LKQ early this year to replace the one in my '87 300D that my wife ran without coolant and killed the motor. Never really liked that car (prefer the earlier W123), and it has been sitting with the dead motor in it for ~8 months (from which I am probably using the turbo for my 2H).

So, here I am, wondering what vehicles I might try to find to install it into.

Candidates would be:
Toyota mini truck (preferably one with a solid front axle)
An older Tacoma or T100.

And that's where I stop...

What I want is a cheap vehicle (preferably one with a bad motor in it) that would fetch a good resale price if converted to diesel, or better yet, one I would keep as a back up to my DD, but with functional UTILITY, (i.e. not a luxury sedan).

All suggestions are welcome, but ones with some technical insight indicating what would be the best/easiest job.

I have the entire MB 300 to use for parts, such as the transmission, harness, etc.

Anyone have a rust-free mini truck with no motor/dead motor, by chance?

If I had my druthers, I would find a cheap 40 or better yet, a 45 to put this motor into, but I can't afford one, even one with no motor.

Insights, offerings, suggestions, profound or mundane?

Howdy! I might have the perfect candidate for you, if it were not for being 2500 miles away. Due to the current economy, I have been thinking about letting go of my 85 mini truck. It has 202000 on the original 22RE. X-cab, 5 speed, 3" body lift, well used 4" spring lift. It has sliders, tube bumpers, and it is dry as toast. The rear has 5.29's with a Detroit, but the front axle has yet to be rebuilt, so this is just a street truck for now. It is wearing 35" MTR's. I still drive it to work everyday, but it is getting tired. I had always wanted to transplant the 4.3 from my wifes Astro van into it, but, the Astro got Clunkered for Cash, and now she drives a new Scion xD. It feels pretty nice having 3 Toyotas in the drive, but the entertainment budget is getting a wee bit thin. It would be a sweet conversion though. Good Luck. John

at my brothers/buddy's shop, they have done 2 similar conversion.
both conversions used the mercedes 5 cylinder turbo diesel motors, and mated them to the stock mini truck 5-speed transmission.

a custom adapter plate for the motor to transmission was fabricated

one of the motors was put in a solid axle 89 4runner, the second motor was put in a 88 toy x-cab
