On the advice of some online resources, I decided to tackle fixing my timing belt cover w/ some acetone and spare ABS scrap. It worked pretty well.

For the whole writeup, you can go to

But here is the before

note that those holes are almost as big as the ball peen hammer's head.

Here is after:

and here is installed (though a crappy pic, sorry, better one pending)

Steve and all,

Thank you guys for recommending this repair. It hadn't occurred to me, but I'll definitely keep it in mind.

I saw Steve's handiwork in person and it is barely perceptible. In my opinion I think that with a little dressing it is possible to effect a completely invisible repair.

Steve, did you use any reinforcing glass to strengthen the repair?

Rick

I just used chunks of ABS and acetone. Nothing more.
I think that some fiberglass or something similar on the inside might lend more strength- but the timing belt cover shouldn't be seeing much impact anyway, so I just ran with it.

to clarify: I actually cut down ABS to almost fit the hole, then made a slurry and added that to the cut-down chunks, bonding them to the sides of the holes. It would have taken forever to just fill the hole with slurry as the slurry/glue/paste/gunk that I made was pretty thin.
