Looking for some opinions here...
i removed my roof rack and was going to fill, sand and coat myself, but i think i want it done properly. the clear coat is mostly shot so i figure i should spend the $$$ and do it right.
i found a body shop to tack weld and re-paint the whole roof for $700. not bad i guess.
Now i wondering what a gray 80 with a white roof would look like. i saw another member here painted his 80 tan with a white roof and it looks good.
what do you all think?

I like the white roof, go for it. Lot of guys on here are not so fond of it so you will hear it from them. The price quote doesn't seem that bad considering they are going to have to tear down the headliner to do the work.

I had considered doing a white roof on my moonglow (grey) 80. I decided to go color matched LineX. LineX was less expensive than paint even with the color matching surcharge.

YMMV

I am not a welder; but I wonder about tack welding on the roof;
ie: sparks dropping down into the headliner?
Just a thought; anyone out there know the answer?

Do It!

I think its a great look, but thats just my opinion, which of couse is more important than anybody elses opinion!

I think it would look pretty good, but you may want to photoshop to see if it is the look that you want.

The headliner should be removed to weld up the holes, for this reason as well as others.

what others?

Don't quote me on this since I know 0 about welding, but I was under the impression that it was best to get behind the hole to weld it.

i don't know crap about welding either..... i just talked to the shop though and they say they take fuill responsibility for all work. if they do or don't drop the headliner i don't care. as long as it doesn't get burned.

a quick photoshop...

my friend did these real quick.
hmm...

What if you brought the white down the A and D pillars?

How about bringing the white up a bit more, just above the A pillar, same in the back, and not
extending it onto the hatch?

What I'd really love to see is someone paint an 80 like a 55. The lines beg for it.

IMO not having it across the top of the hatch, but instead cut off forward of the hatch, would look a little imbalanced front to rear. where it's at in these pics is what i'm thinking. the lines are more original to the FJ40's and the like. i wonder what it would look like with the white down the A and D pillars. someone with some photoshop skills want to chop it up?

With the color that far down, you are getting close to a two-tone.

I would guess that the original purpose for painting the roof white
was to keep the vehicle a tad cooler; ie: pre-A/C era.

How about this; add a roof-shield (not really sure what they call it)
that was put on early (??current) Range Rovers; purpose was
to reflect heat off the roof; again keeping it cooler inside.

Great observation Derek- the 80 shares more character lines w/ the 60 & 55, not the 40. I think those chops that sharam did look good, lots better putting splitting the body color at the bodyline imo.

To me, the white roof looks FJCruiser wannabe... there are no lines that follow the roof being a diff. color. but diff strokes for diff folks..

I cheated, I had seen the mentioned thread. I really just want to see someone pul the trigger on that paint scheme. I think it would look great.

I guess Landcrusher70 should get the credit for that scheme... looks nice. I like the resemblance to the 62 oem 2-tone

then again, my LX450 is 2 tone! hehe
