Hi all, i recently bought myself a near perfect HJ61. For some reason now when i turn it off the turbo timer keeps in going as usual then once the minute or 2 passes all my dash accessories turn off but the engine keeps running.

Now I've done abit of research and i know these dont have an EDIC apparently and that it turns off via a butterfly which is controlled by a vacuum operated actuator which i have located and when i pull the linkage attached to the actuator the engine shuts down.

I've checked for vacuum leaks.. nothing.

So i ask, does the diaphragm in the actuator tend to fall apart?? the car does have 420,000 on the clock.

can you buy these units new?

is this even my problem?

any help is appreciated.

Cheers,

Ivan.

just realised that the actuator isn't the problem as it works when i pull the linkage and when i remove a hose going to the actuator and block it with my finger it holds pressure so diaphragm is all good.

So what is it then..... do these things stuff up over time? (refer to pictures except for actuator)

Ivan,

You're correct in finding the device that turns off the engine. It is SO simple, push it and it will start, choke the air supply and it stops :-)

But why the butterfly does not close, I'm not sure.

Have you located and checked the electric switch that controls the actuator?
Have you checked the electrical supply to that switch?

Is there vacuum going to that switch. My feeling is that a vacuum line has come off, but you say you've checked all that.

What happens when you run a fresh vacuum line from the back of the alternator to the butterfly. This will help you work out if the actuator is broken.

I've not heard of an actuator breaking, but if you post to the diesel and 24v section, you're likely to get a better response.

Has it ever worked since you bought the car? Maybe the lines are the wrong way around. An image of the vacuum lines are at http://www.peoplehelp.com.au/landcruiser/manuals/vacuum lines 12h-t.pdf Yes it looks like spaghetti. If you print the document out, then mark the pressure and vacuum lines in different colours, it helps to figure out what goes where.

Can the previous owner shed any light on this?

Hope this helps.

Ivan,

The valves that are in a pair are the 4WD control valves. No need to touch them

The valve that is attached to the cross over pipe controls your shut off actuator.

There appears to be only one wire that goes to the shut down valve. And it looks like someone has cut and joined the single wire. That'd be a really good place to start looking.

Thanks Tim for the reply, the picture is a bit deceiving theres 2 wires going to the shut down valve just the angle i took the picture ... sorry about the confusion.

Yes it did turn off while i've had it, and now all the sudden it doesn't

i did speak to old owner and he never had any problems

Okay,

Maybe you can swap the shut down actuator valve, the electrically switched valve, with the one that increases your idle when the air cond comes on, or when the engine is cold. If you swap the valves over - I think they are the same, you will be able to start to isolate the problem.

It's all a matter of trial and error. You have checked fuses haven't you...

IIR its called a VSV and way back when mine malfunctioned I pulled off the black round piece and blew it clear with air I was told at the time they sometimes clog up with carbon after I blasted it with an air hose it worked and I have not had any issues since.

ALRIGHTY THEN! its fixed, took the cap off, blew it with my mouth and wallah its works thanx Tim for your efforts and special thank you to dieseler for directing me to the exact fix

Mine did the same thing ivz187.
My problem was the vaccum switch on the back of the crossover pipe.
I rang Toyota and they quoted me some rediculous price (think $145) for a switch.
I got an SV21 Camry aircond idle up vaccum switch so if it was ever a problem again
i could just get one from a wreckers for $5.
Touch wood i havnt had a problem since.

Good outcome, and a helpful learning experience all round
