I've been having a little "fun" with the A/C fan relay lately. The fan relay also switches on the A/C system and lately the fan has not come on all the time. It will sometimes come on and other times you need to throw the switch several times before it comes on. I'm thinking dirty contacts inside the relay but if I remember right the relay is a sealed plastic unit. Has anyone opened one or is there a spare relay kicking around that someone doesn't want/need or am I overlooking something obvious? The switch works fine in all speeds so I doubt it is a switch problem.

I need the A/C to work as we live in Sierra Leone and it's hot all the time.

Nope, no help with that. The diesel is different on the A/C amplifier. My problem is the relay not the amplifier.

My fan sometimes turns on and sometimes not. When the fan runs the A/C is fine, when the fan doesn't run the A/C doesn't run.

Can you just order a new one from Toyota?

Not an option here in Sierra Leone. Lot's of Toyota's but the parts suppliers are idiots even the "official" one. Anyone stateside want to order me one and send it?

Are you talking about the fan blower relay? Does it have something to do with the A/C?
My 81 harness only has a fan relay, nothing for the A/C that I am aware of, will this be an issue?
Hoping to get my A/C stuff installed in the next few weeks.

I just fixed a problem like yours

Mine was related to cold, but I think it's the same problem. It turns out it was the resistor. My fan stopped working it the first (lo) position and when it was really cold, it wouldn't work at all, no heat, no defrost, no A/C light, not anything (luckily the rear heater still worked). Sometimes it would be a couple of days, sometimes it would come back by flipping the switch a bunch of times, but it would come back eventually, so I knew it wasn't the circuit breaker. I assumed it was the switch, because the first position had stopped working completely. I bought a new switch ($50) and a relay ($20) for good measure. I held off on the resistor because it was $80 and I really thought it was the switch. I installed the new switch and relay, no luck, same issues. The only part left to try was the resistor. I ordered it and replaced it and that was the ticket. I was surprised at the condition of the old one. It is three separate little coils that have an epoxy type compound holding them together, the epoxy was all cracked and separated. It seems fragile, but it is screwed into the drivers side of the heater box and is fairly secure I guess since it lasted 23 years.
I suppose yours could be the switch or the relay, but neither worked for me.
Good luck!:)

Maybe but I doubt it. The fan works on all switch positions reliably when the fan comes on, that's how I regulate my inside temps. Too cool and I slow the fan, too warm and I speed it up. The fan relay also controls the A/C and when the fan doesn't blow the A/C light doesn't light and the compressor doesn't contact either. If you have a spare relay that goes under the dash I am interested.

John, the blower relay on non-A/C equipped trucks will not work with the factory wiring harness for A/C. The A/C relay has a separate tab for connecting the A/C to. This is to ensure there is fan operation whenever the A/C is powered.

The non-A/C fan relay is a small round one like all the others at the relay strip, the A/C relay is a much larger square one with a stake-on connecter protruding from the side. It's back close to the firewall. You will, or should, find a white/brown wire hanging in the area with nothing to do and that wire goes to the A/C/fan relay stake-on to power the A/C system. If you do not connect it the rest of the A/C harness will be dead.

Where do I get this relay? Would it be a part that was on the FJ60? If you have time to pull it off and post a part number that would be great, thanks!
Just when I thought I had everything! :)

Charles is this it? So this should go at the far end towards the front of the truck? The only wire I can see that is free that will go on the spade is white/black? it is white/black on the 84FJ harness as well as the 81 and 84 BJ harness.
Part number is 85913-90A01
ND part # is 056700-5560

That looks like the right one!!

Jeff, I may have one coming already. I'll let you know if it doesn't work out.

Charles,

Going off memory, that doesn't look like the one I replaced and was going to send, my 62 part might be different. I'll look and send a pic when I'm out of work.

Dave, I did some research and the FJ62 uses a different relay than the '60 :(

I did some more research, pulled the relay and it matches the one John has exactly, part numbers and all. According to the manual terminals 1 and 2 have 75 ohms and mine is 77 ohms so that is close enough but terminals 3 and 4 should have 0 ohms, mine has an open circuit so I guess that kind of settles it.

I need a relay!!

Jeff, PM coming your way :)

Charles,

I agree, I'm looking at mine and it is totally different, especially the extra pigtail on the back. Sorry it didn't work out!
