Having recently re-done the seats in my Ghia, I figured it was time to look into doing the saggy, packed out seats in the Cruiser. Time consuming, but not too tough. then I say to myself, "self" ..there's a reason I like to tinker on VW's...parts are cheap! $OR has the stuff to re-do them manually, to OEM looking. Too rich for my blood to then have to pull the seats and re-stretch, hogring...etc. For that cost, I could almost pay someone to do it for me.

Then...I remember IPOR sells them...although not OEM, they look nice, and are cheaper oh! and I don't have to do it!

Anyone with experience with them and had them for a while? How are they holding up? Is the driving Position (height) the same or decent? install pretty easy?

thanks.

You mean these ones? Those are pretty! I've heard good things about Procar seats. Might want to look at Corbeau, too...

Greetings from Louisville. I'm new to the neighborhood. You haven't seen my truck around, because it's been torn apart up in the mountains for almost a year. :)

pep boys sells APC brand "racing" seats. Theyre pretty cool and only cost $200 My neighbor bought two black ones with vinyl fabric. He has had them for about one year and they still look like new, plus they are really comfy.

try the apc seats first. they are an acquired feel. i sat in some at proffitt's cause he said they were the worst seats he'd sat in. i wasn't too impressed, but maybe they need to break in. they were very stiff and i could feel the seperation in pads. also the lumbar was weird

anyone repad and cover their seats? is it worth the mucho $ that's paid, or is aftermarket the way to go?

I think if you're gonna spend the money to recover and re-pad the seats, getting a full custom job would be the way to go. That way you could actually get decent lumbar support, better side bolsters, and all that good stuff. The stock seats just don't feel that good to me.

I bet if you went to a car show with lots of rice rockets, you could sit in all kinds of seats. Or maybe a Cruiser show. I wonder where I could find one of those in Colorado in mid-August? :)

IPOR Seats

I had the first set installed by IPOR and feel they are the best available.

I am 6" tall and around 200 lbs ;) yea a little over 200, and the form fitting seats out there or more specifically the ones that have a pronounced shoulder support are not comfortable at all. The seats out there for the import craze, I feel, are there for the young, small shouldered, or just plane puny.

The IPOR seats have adequate side bolster to keep you in the seat and a good rake to the seat base that can be adjusted more by the mounting brackets and have held up well to some pretty good abuse in my 40. The design of the sides makes it easy to turn your body to see around the vehicle which is what many of the "race" style seats prevent. I also like the ability to tilt the seat back. The mastercraft seats I thought were comfortable but did not offer the adjustment and made me feel like I was poured into a bowl.

I would buy the IPOR seats again in a heartbeat.

I've got a set in my 60, and love them. I'd rather sit in them all day than the fully adjustable stock seats in my wife's LX450. I get uncomfortable on long trips in the LX.

I felt they sat too low as is, so I added 1 1/2 inch spacers and used longer bolts and it sits right where I want it. I'm 6', and my legs have plenty of room and I don't even have the sliders all the way back like I did with the stock seats.

They install easy too...

Pull old seats
Pull sliders off old seats
Bolt sliders onto new seats (add spacer to raise height)
Bolt new seat in.

5-15 minutes per seat and you're done!

Took me 45 minutes to an hour just to put the SOR upholstery on one seat- in an earlier search for new seats. big pain in the a$$.

I just located this photo of the IPOR seats in Rustydog.

I've installed the $OR replacement pads in my truck's seats and they change things much for the better. Insanely priced but fairly easy to do and you remain stock - the pads are very well made . The pad raises you up about 2" from the height of the typically sagged out Cruiser seat and puts your back where it is supposed to be on the seat back so you once again have decent lumbar support. They haven't sagged a bit in the two years they have been in. They will still be the same old Cruiser seats and some of the aftermarket seats have much to offer. I stuck with the stock ones because of the storage space available them which is in short supply on a stock 60 series interior.
Shawn, if you are at the RS meeting tomorrow night, you can check them out and drive a peppy 62 too. Wow!!

i too have redone my front seats with sor tuffy covers and their replacement foam. turned out very nice and they are 100% comfortable if a bit stiff still but they dont sag anymore at all and the back and lumbar support is way better than the broken down situation i had before. i would recommend biting the bullet and investing in them rather than replacements that you might not be happy with in a year or so.

ive also gotten them pretty dirty and they just wiped clean. thats a nice feature. and they look fairly stock (the covers i mean) and as mentioned you retain the under-seat storage for what thats worth.

one love

I had my stock recovered and rebuilt. We add some more support laterally, and I also had them put in an adjustable lumbar. And seat heaters.

Seat heat was 225 for both, lumbar 75 or so each. And about 250-300 for recovering.

I also had my rear seat rebuilt/recovered with head rests installed. And my door panels recovered.

As well the center console was built. My final bill was near 3k canadian. So 2500 ish USD.

Not cheap, but very comfortable. I am sure a good auto reupholster in a big city would be even cheaper if you just went with standard recover. The place I had mine done was in Calgary.

Thanks Everyone! keep it coming!

wow...I'm still torn, like the side of my DS seat. ;-)

Overhanger - I'll be there, thanks! Can't wait to burn rubber in Bart...(JK)

Just to shock everyone:

SOR bottom seat foam: ~$150/each
SOR DS Bottom fabric: $210 in the clearance section
OR
SOR full upholstery set front: $220

To do both seat ~$510-$520

To replace both seats ~$530.

hmmmm.....Is my time worth the $10-$20...I'm starting to think so.

thanks for the great replies...keep'em comin'.

Shawn,
Tomorrow night you can see the covers I got from GT covers right here in Saudi Aurora. In fact, I have a pair of their tuff duck covers that I would sell. They are light gray and your truck has a brown interior, though, doesn't it?
http://www.gtcovers.com They look factory and then you wouln't have to worry about the original upholstry's appearance.

GT makes awsome covers, i have a set in the front of my 60 for the last 5 years.
no wear what so ever and i slide in with it being soa.

we just ordered a set for our parts truck too.

maybe i'll come to the meeting tomorrow and drive the 60 and you can check them out.

I've rode in my 62 with stock seats and hopped in Username?'s 60 with those seats and words cannot describe the difference. I like them a lot and they certainly have been added to my wish list.

I'm gonna pull the trigger and get these seats in the next couple weeks. Can you elaborate on the spacers? What did you use, etc? Especially compared to your height, what worked for you? I'm pretty short...so that info would be helpful.

Also....anyone else with experience, feel free to chime in. Any pros/cons over time?

thanks!

I've had them a little over a year, and so far they are holding up great.

As for the spacers, I got them at Lowe's. I think I used the 1 1/2 inch and I'm 6'0. They are a little on the tall side. You might try the 1 inch and see how that works. You could also put different heights in the front and back if you need to fine tune it. The spacer goes between the slider and the seat (with some longer bolts).
