I suspected that there was a problem with my t-case (metal chunks in the case oil, and odd noises). Well the case is out, not looking to bad, but definitely found a problem! Not sure, but I think it may be a symptom of something else maybe a failed bearing. Looking at the photo the gear that is broken is (sorry for nomenclature) what appears to be the high range gear set. The larger ring to the right of the small broken one has some play in it as does the small ring that is broken. Not a lot but I can wiggle it around a bit by hand. I have an Orion on the way and would like to get this one usable but not really interested in a complete rebuild if its unnecessary. What are your thoughts? Think I can replace some bearings and the broken gear and maybe get by with this one till my Orion shows up? Are these gears interchangeable with a 3 speed case?

Your transfer case was built between April of 1975 and January of 1976. I have rebuilt several hundred transfer cases at my shop in the last 23 years, and this particular timeframe has a very high failure rate for the small teeth on the hi speed output gear. Toyota changed the design of the gear in January of 1976 to remedy the defect, so as long as you buy a brand new replacement gear, or a used one from a 76 -80 case, you'll be fine.

Sent you a PM Mark.

I feel your pain

Mine was toast when I bought it. Didn't know because the truck didn't run when I bought it! Original 1975 transfer case - so this helps to further substantiate Mark's post.

Check your other gears carefully. Those bouncing metal chunks took a lot of other gears with them in my case.
