Hi,

I've read a whole bunch of the timing belt threads but I'm still confused as to the correct change interval for the UZJ100 model timing belts.

All the Australian forum threads seem to say 90,000 miles (which I guess is around 150,000km). The sticker on mine (a Japanese import GH-UZJ100W-GNAGK 2004 model) says 100,000km. So which is it? Could there really be a difference of 50,000km between regions?

Mine has done 120,000km and doesn't appear to have any sticker indicating it's been changed. I bought it at 114,000 without much of a written service history, except that it had been serviced at Toyota main dealers in Japan until 98,000km.

Thanks!

go by your manual but not sure why a japanese vs us delivery would matter as all the engines are made in same factory... all else fails follow your owners manual recommended service.... Are you sure the sticker is not just the one under hood that shows WHEN it was changed last (if ever) rather than one giving recommended intervals?

Recommended I am guessing is the same (90k miles)....the stickers show when it was completed....some do them early some do them on time and some do them late putting off the costs as long as possible...or more typical they sell the vehicle so they dont have to do it themselves.

There's no sticker that appears to be timing belt related on the hood or front of the engine compartment. What I can see is a sticker that says 100,000km and something else (see pic) on a black round metal part at the front of the engine itself. Perhaps it's not the timing belt, you could be right.

I guess I assumed because it was all printed (nothing handwritten eg date) that it couldn't be indicating the replacement had been done. Have attached pics of the only other stickers on the offchance there's a Japanese reader on the board.

The manual is all in Japanese too, so that doesn't help me much.

Thanks...

Wierd, all I have are stabs in the dark

-They assume more start/stop and heat cycles on a small island vs. huge continents?

-They don't want Japanese people to ever see a broken LC in the home country?

-They change engines so young in Japan that 100k, km seems like a lifetime and T didn't want to suggest it was a lifetime part?

-If you can afford to drive an LC in Japan you can afford more timing belts than the rest of us?

-Wierd Japanese Gov reg?

-Typo?

I would go 100,000 miles and then change it, IIRC there have been no broken T-belts on the board and just a few water pump failures.

I happened to see a Japanese friend tonight who was able to translate the wording on the first photo, which basically says the timing belt has to be changed at 100,000km. Same at the bottom of the sticker in the third photo. The second photo is irrelevant, something to do with the battery.

I still find the discrepancy strange vs other regions, but given that I'm at 120k I figure I ought to do it soon. If it does go on a V8 that's got to be some pretty expensive repairs.

100,000km equals 62000 miles so that makes sense if that was the original requirement.....but extended it for American market to 90,000 miles for whatever reason.

100k seems extremely premature for changing a toyota tbelt. I changed mine at 147k miles, and although it looked worn, it wasn't anywhere near snapping.

Not that you should go beyond the recommended replacement range, but here's the original belt from my '99 after 230K miles of service.

The previous owner did the timing belt and water pump at 60K in 2004, now the truck has 89K. It seems like it was done rather early. That being said when should I change the belt? What is more important, the mileage or the number of years of service? THe belt on has 29K on it, but is almost 8 years old.

Can't tell... does it look good, or no?

Yep. Regular superficial surface cracking, which is common but not structural. Edges were sharp and free of defects. Remarkable given the miles it had done.
Once again, don't rely on this to delay your scheduled belt change. Its just an example of how lucky you might be if you leave it too long.
