How do you change transponder key battery?

It takes a really tiny phillips screwdriver. Remove the screw on the backside near the base of the key blade. Pry the cover up and back at the same time, there's a small tab that it notches into near the key ring. The button module will lift out. Then there are 2 more smaller phillips screws on an inner cover and the battery is under there. The battery slides and lifts out. It is a 3 volt battery, size 1616 (16 mm diameter x 1.6 mm thick).

No need to reprogram it. With a new battery it should be good to go. Just did mine last weekend for the 2nd time in 4 years.

They work much better with fresh batteries.

When I reassemble mine I use blue loctite on the screws. When the screw loosens it puts additional pressure on the poorly designed case and the case can break.

I just had mine replaced for the first time also. The guy at radioshack did exactly what Donco discribed as I watched. He even cleaned all of my pocket lint out of there with contact cleaner for $5 including the battery. Now I don't have to stand on my head with the hood open to get it to work.

They change just about everyone's batteries down here and he said that our key is the best designed one he has ever seen. I said that I was very pleased with it...just don't go swimming with it in your pocket.

It's really dirt simple to do yourself. As proof, I changed mine a few weeks ago. I picked up a set of tiny screwdrivers on the clearance rack at Sears for about $8.
