Newbie looking to get started in HAM - noticed a local Yaesu FT-101E for $300 - is it worth it?
Should be getting started on my license soon.

Hard to say, it's an older discontinued model. I guess you do realize that it's an HF radio, and that you'll need at least a General Class license to operate it (except for some limited CW privileges)?

What exactly are you wanting to do with a ham radio (i.e. trail use, long-distance contacts, etc.)?

I had a Yaseu 101E ~ 30 years ago, these were great radios back then, but for the dollars there are far better radios out there with better filtering, DSP, memory's, and many other options that the advent of microcontrolers has added. The FT 101 had none of that. But, as the previous poster said, depends on what your trying to get out of it. For my money, id look for a better and more feature rich rig.
