HF has its mechanics stet on sale for all of $2.50 (from $5).
Couldn't resist getting one since I'm a sucker for tool gadgets.
Well, I had tried before all the DIY implementations such as the wood rod (not at all a good idea IMO), hoses, screwdrivers, modified doctor's stec, etc, on the odd occasion when I wanted to hear something in the engine. This sort of worked.

But, this gizmo is an order of magnitude better. It actually sounds like a highly-amplified electronic gizmo. The level and clarity of sound is stunning. I'm guessing it is based on some sort of clever diaphragm system for amplifiying the sound, as expected, but this one really works!

I can hear minute differences in noises in the valve train through the cover, can hear the timing chain wishing around, the rotor in the distrib, etc.

I'm impressed.

Definitely worth $2.5 just for the fun of using it once or twice, let alone to put it to good use!

are you gonna post about the adjustable wrench next?

:D :flipoff2: :D

i got one of those tools your talkin bout. I use it to detect worn bearings.
I work a a general shop, so im im not talking bout fixing toyotas.
yeah, they sure are nice.
I also just got a new tool, too!
Im not sure of all its uses, but i think i can figure it out when the time comes.
it has a long handle, and a steel head, i belive its called a whammer.
so far all i have done is smash bugs.:D

yup, been meaning to try something like this on bearings for a while, but had assumed that you'd need to spend $50 and up for a good one so I passed. But this one works amazingly well for $2.50. Recommended!

Just wait until he finds out about vice grips!:flipoff2:

if you have the sthethescope I am thinking about you can also disconnect the tubing from the amplifier part and use the hose to pinpoint exhaust leaks
