i was thinking about welding nuts on the inside of the ends of the pipes that will be notched out to meet another pipe, and drilling a hole in the intersecting pipe to put the bolt through, and bolting the pipes together until i decide to paint the truck. because i would want all of the body armor to be removable. and then i could weld it together after painting the body. has anyone had this idea before? would it work? i understand it would not offer real protection until it's welded, but would it hold together on the road at least?
 
waste of time , just tack em and grind the tacks off later.

I did something similar in which I wanted to be able to remove my inner seat/ console cage, so I made some simple brackets for my removeable bars. As you can see in the last pic, I used a larger tube to sleeve the main bars:
