hello all, i am not a member of any LC club as of yet because i dont yet own one...but im looking. typically im a jeep guy but think im falling in love with the 40!! unfortunately im on an extremely tight budget, and yes i understand that yota parts are more expensive, ive been doing quite a bit of research lately. im looking for something that i will not have to put a ton of money into it at first just to be drivable and street legal, then i can throw money at it here and there, so...
i found this...any comments?

Unless they're both rust buckets with rusted frames you can't go wrong.

Sean:

Unfortunately, "FJ40" and "tight budget" usually don't go together. But, for a safely driveable 40 for $1700 it's worth checking out. Drive it and see what you think. I would recommend asking someone with some experience to help you look for the common FJ40 problems and assist in assessing if it's a good deal. I'm sure somebody in the Pittsburgh area will help. Good luck!

thank you for your comments, that was going to be my next question...what are some of the common problems with FJ40s??

thanks again
sean

Rust - rockers, door bottoms (all 4), rear sill, floor, frame, windshield frame, fenders, quarters, ...

Check the frame for cracks where the rear spring hangers attach

My vote is no. I bought a 40 from that area and the rust was everywhere. Unless you can see it for yourself and look it over inside and out I would pass.

Personally I would not buy any early model vehicle from the Rust Belt let alone a 40.

I learned the lesson the hardware.

Sean, check with the Steel City LC club out there. I'm sure you can find someone willing to help you look.
