Woody, are you colocating this service?

dedicated server, located in Reno, leased.

Yes on the CAC, but haven't had any time to look at since I brought it up earlier...lol

hard drive space isn't the issue....the limits are upgraded with silverstar status, along with a number of other items.

The next server upgrade will likely be a 2nd box to serve the database exclusively....targeting that upgrade sometime this coming Fall. it's a "must" do before the forum hits 2m posts.

use to peak about 12-10.xx...upgraded to a true P4 processor from a Celeron and it rarely hits above 2.0.

perfect.

vBulletin recommends a 2nd server once posts top 2m....I've stayed ahead of the curve with the server thus far, and plan to keep that trend going ;)

2.0 on a single proc is about perfect. Are the P4 dual-cores like the Xeons? I don't know much about the Intel world anymore. Ahh! Never noticed those loads down there before. Quite cool!

I know you know this, but I'd use dedicated gigabit NICs between the two nodes and never hit a switch.

I do massive database applications (7-50 tebibytes) and putting our app servers on different boxen actually has caused us slowdowns between the network stack and kernel time to handle the fragementation rather than hitting direct memory. What I've always noticed in this business is ``scale up, not out.''

Of course that also assumes a big budget...but...

hehehe....big budget...you slay me ;)

Total bandwidth on the site is about 290g a month average....peak of 7350 single day unique visitors, 280k single day hits, and 4.5m page views.

Processor is a normal boring 2.4 P4, 1g ram, single 40g IDE primary, 18g SCSI for MySQL, and a IDE backup.

Database is about 1/2g in size so it effectively resides in memory at all times....

Really, I'm an idiot at this stuff and simply research all the best options....also, my host contact is an ex-cruiserhead and he offers excellent advice on setup as well. The 'MUD server is one of the most trouble-free on their system.

there is such a thing as an EX cruiser head?

lol....ok, a cruiserhead turned mountainbikehead who is looking for the right cruiser.... ;)

better.
