WOHVA Update June, 2011

Since our last update, WOHVA has diligently assuring that environmentally
responsible OHV recreational opportunities remain available nationwide and are expanded here the Badger State. Just a few of the things WOHVA has been up to recently include:

WOHVA contacted the US Forest Service (USFS) and urged Chief Tidwell to
extend the public comment period expiring on May 16, 2011, for the Draft
Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) and proposed rule for the Forest Planning Rule. On May 4, 2011, Chief Tidwell responded to our request, denying an extension of the public comment period.

With the denial of our request, it becomes vital that all WOHVA individual Members contact their Representative and both State Senators and ask them to do what they can to stop this bureaucratic nightmare before it becomes policy.

Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest (CNNF) staffers from the Laona/Lakewood Ranger District and WOHVA met, toured and discussed areas of concern on Forest Road #55552 (The Pipeline). Discussion centered around trail erosion, trail closures, current and future grants, fire dangers, wet areas, standing water, recreationists disregarding closed areas, our Joint Memo of Understanding (MOU), our pending 4WD Sticker Program Legislation and future updates to the Motorized Vehicle Use Map (MVUM).

The MOU should be signed later this summer. Additionally, later this summer the CNNF & WOHVA will begin working on the Phase Two Grant for The Pipeline. It’s anticipated that this Grant will be much larger in scope addressing the long term sustainability of area and the ability of it remaining a viable motorized recreational opportunity for future generations.

WOHVA was contacted by CNNF staff and offered our assistance in extending
the then Voluntary 10 Day Recreational Trail Opening Delay. We encouraged all motorized trail users to delay starting their trail riding season until such time that the trails had dried and firmed. As always, WOHVA urges trail riders to always follow the Tread Lightly! Principles and avoid wet trails, standing water, mud and wetlands. Respected/Responsible Access is Open Access!

Forest County Forestry/Recreation Department WOHVA met to discuss trail
projects in and around Crandon, Wisconsin.

WOHVA participated in the 1st Wolf River Tourism Conference.

Due to wet conditions, the CNNF & WOHVA agreed to cancel WOHVA’s Annual
Spring Pipeline Trail Day which had been scheduled to take place on Saturday, May 14th.

WOHVA plans to reschedule WOHVA’s Annual Spring Pipeline Trail Day for a weekend in June. Please watch the WOHVA Forums for updates on this event.

WOHVA met with the Forest County Chamber of Commerce to discuss moving
ahead with a Motorized Recreation Area (MRA) without assistance from the
Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

Motorized recreationists are well aware of the snails pace at which the DNR has moved on this project since receiving a mandate from the Wisconsin Natural Resources Board (NRB) to explore the potential of this project in June of 2006.

The Crandon International Off-Road Raceway and WOHVA met to discuss possible trail riding opportunities on a small parcel of land adjacent to the track complex.

Discussion centered on responsible trail development, liability issues, wetland concerns and day-to-day business operation should the project move ahead.

WOHVA met with the Forest County Sheriff to discuss responsible and safe,
recreational opportunities on trails and properties in Forest County.

WOHVA had the opportunity to meet with and discuss issues of vital importance to motorized recreation enthusiasts with the following elected officials; Wisconsin Lieutenant Governor Rebecca Kleefisch, Wisconsin State Senator Jim Holperin and Wisconsin State Assembly Representative Jeffrey Mursau.

The WOHVA Board of Directors held their regular bi-monthly meeting in Fredonia, Wisconsin.

WOHVA Individual Members can review the agenda, minutes, financial reports and other documents pertaining to all Board Meetings in the WOHVA Updates Forum located in the Forums Section of the WOHVA website.

Volunteers from WOHVA spent an entire Sunday removing trash and debris from the stream bed and shoreline of Rangeline Creek in southern Forest County.

WOHVA’s team of Mole Lake Trails Coordinators met with the Sokaogon/Chippewa Forestry Department to discuss and inspect trails and potential trail sites on the Tribal holdings near Mole Lake, Wisconsin.

As a result of a meeting earlier in the month between the Crandon International Off-Road Raceway (The Track) and WOHVA, the WOHVA Board of Directors formally expressed their interest in assisting The Track in developing and operating trail riding opportunities on their property on select weekends throughout the 2012 trail riding season. WOHVA’s past experience with The Track (WOHVA Volunteers have worked events at The Track for the past 8 years and also partnered with The Track to co-host the 40th Anniversary Brush Run 101 Trail Ride) prompted The Track to contact WOHVA on this project.

WOHVA Volunteers gathered for the first Mole Lake Trails Day of the 2011 trail riding season. This first outing was focused on the development of full-size trails for larger 4WD vehicles.

If you’re interested in joining us in Mole Lake and becoming a WOHVA trail volunteer, visit our forums for information on getting involved. A complete listing of all WOHVA’s scheduled events for 2011 (including Mole Lake Trails Days) are available under the WOHVA Events tab on our web site

um...any chance of a 'real' post? SEO could care less about an attached pdf file...

WOHVA will gain FAR more followers without the pdf as well...

I only had the downloaded PDF so I dropped it to .txt, opened it in Word and cleaned it up and saved it. Hopefully that works better. Do you think on our own site we should have the document also and just attach a PDF for those who want to down load it? I know many people are hesitant to click links or download anything. I assume that is the justification for having the text immediately viewable?

Thank you for the heads up.

yep, pdf is not nearly as good as the full text when it comes to SEO...plus working in the correct titles, etc :)

I know a guy....

Cooperative Agreement Signed

The long anticipated Memorandum of Understanding Between The Wisconsin Off-Highway Vehicle Association And The USDA, Forest Service Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest was signed, sealed and delivered to WOHVA earlier this month.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) documents cooperation between the two parties. Additionally, the purpose of the MOU is to continue to develop and expand upon the framework of cooperation between WOHVA and the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) in the development of mutually beneficial programs, projects, and activities pertaining to the management of the Pipeline 4x4 Recreation Trail.

WOHVA & the USFS have been working together for several years to provide quality riding experiences for WOHVA Members and other parties searching for safe, resource friendly areas to drive 4x4 vehicles and off-highway motorcycles in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest (CNNF). It is mutually beneficial for both WOHVA and the USFS to work cooperatively to further develop the conservation ethic of motorized recreation enthusiasts. The MOU recognizes WOHVA’s efforts to instill greater understanding of the needs for responsible motorized recreation through environmental education awareness. Further, the MOU points out that both the USFS and WOHVA share the common responsibility and interest of developing and disseminating relevant OHV information to the public regarding conservation, recreation and natural resource activities as they relate to motorized recreation on the CNNF.

The MOU is effective as of June 24th, 2011 and through June 1st, 2016. After the fifth year, the MOU will expire unless extended by an executed modification approved by both the USFS & WOHVA. Additional details on the MOU can be obtained from the WOHVA Executive Committee. The document will be available for review at the WOHVA Board of Directors Meeting on August 10th and at WOHVA’s 8th Annual Wisconsin OHV Enthusiasts Workshops on April 12th, 13th & 14th, 2012.

Lots of good info there. I think Woody was just saying that you will get more Google trafic from the text.

Pictures are always cool though. :-)

Woody is right but as you probably know I suck at the intraweb and I couldn't get the pictures to work with a cut and paste so the Woodman said to link it. Glad you read it!
