following the diagram below, i wired up my soon-to-be-mounted fog lights ( whenever the bumper comes).
al least all i have to do will be the under hood wiring, because its starting to get cold now.
anyway...looking at the diagram...If i use battery power to the switch, instead of taking off the ignition circuit, wont i have high current at the switches???
where can i get the power for the switches????
under the hood, where the relay is mounted, is a fusebox, along with the one in the cab.
but i cant seen to find ANYWHERE where i can get the low current power for the switch!!!
I did a dry run, using battery power, and the wires going to the switch smoked.so i know that instruction is wrong.
help!
Its getting dark, wife hates it when i work on any of my trucks, so i need to get it done fast.!!!!!!
Thanks

As long as you wire it up like the diagram you posted, it will be fine. You can use direct power for the switch, as long as you use the relay to power the lights. Make sure you put another fuse in that line, as well. The switch will only draw what it needs. Just don't draw the power for the lights through the switch.
If it's smoking that way, there is a problem somewhere.

direct power to the switch smoked the wires into the cab. the whole purpose is to have low current in the cab for the switching. I cannot figure this out. and its driving me nuts.
If i have direct power from the battery going to the switch, and i turn it on, the circuit goes throught he relay, and closes the contacts, but its full battery power, and i would have to use high capacity cable, some thing the diagram clains isnt needed.
something s not right

looked it over some more, and since., even though i am pulling power from the battery, the only circuit i was closing was the relay. I powered up the switch ( it lighted "on") and before i could check to see if the relay closed, the wires started to burn. I was using 22 gauge ribbon cable to the switches, and even that gauge wire should not burn, being the relay only pulls something like less than an amp.
were the wires too small?
I have been knocking this around all day, and cannot seem to find any mistakes.

Here are two old articles by me on how to wire up lights and get aux power by adding a 2nd fuse box.

The aux box I added to clean up the mess in the in cab fuse box where I had tapped in behind the fuses to "engergize" my light switches and CB radio.

I thank everyone for the help, but I am still wondering...following all the instructions, and having the wire burn, IS IT BECAUSE THE GAUGE WAS TOO SMALL????
all the pictures and help are fine, and it seems i did everything right...but...

The wires will only melt if you are drawing too much through them, or if you have your ground mixed up. The switch won't draw that much. There's not much I can do from here, but there has to be a problem.

Solved!!!!

I think it was a combo of too small wires. I used 12 Gauge MTW wire, and everything rang out. All I have to do is wait ( more ) for my new Bumper, mount the lights, and the harness is all ready to go!
Thanks to all who piped in with ideas!!!!
Andy
