Will Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) Rules Kill the FJ Cruiser?

CAFE rules apply to the average fuel economy across the mfg.rs ENTIRE line up. If they offset the poor mileage of the FJ Cruiser with the good mileage of a hybrid, they are alright.

Sounds like that's not going to be the case anymore starting in 2008. Light trucks grouped into two groups. I always felt this was the driving factor of why the 40/70 series was dropped from the US market in favor of the 4 cylinder 4Runners. Started in lower import numbers in 1979 when the they introduced the 4 cylinder 4X4 pickup. The 40 market was a lot larger than the 55 market in 1978 so by starting toreplace the 40 with the 4 cylinder pickups there avarage got better. I'm sure the average was figured on total number sold not just the average of the models. If it was it would have been easy to just make a 50 mph car and priced it for 50k and sell two and helped there average a bunch. So it happened in the past it could happen again. In 1979 the 40 got thinner metal and 370 gears to help with mileage. On the FJ Cruiser it all ready has plastic bumpers. Probably harder to help the mileage since that is already done from the start on all new vehicles these days, especially vehicles designed just for the North America market.
