So, I just got a 83 fj60. The engine is toast as is the tranny. My goal is v8 with auto tranny. Maybe all setup to a d300. Still torn and have not seen if it will even work, but I don't see why not.

Why is it the 350 seems to be the big engine for the toyota swap? Is it parts? Wire issues? I know in my Jeep we have a ford 5.0 and I liked that better then the 350, but for the cruise I think the 350 is a better bet, but is that really the only reason?

I am looking this up so if this is a post that comes every day, just let it die, but if I am not aware of a engine guys like or some reason why the 350 is a must, then please post.

Cheers

Easy to get parts, conversion kits, good engine, and lots of performance parts. Personally for offroading I think the stock 2F is better with it's lower torque curve but it will run out of power in the real thick stuff. Compared to a Ford 351 V8 the GM 350 V8 kinda sucks. No offense to GM fans but the GM engine needs to rev to much to get power, the Ford doesn't.

Well,

The engine, can bre rebuilt yes, but I figure I might as well put a v8 in there since that is what I want. This will not see much off road as I have a jeep and two buggies, so more road and beach then anything, but just like my nature I can't leave any car I own alone. It's for the boss (the gf) to drive and figure I just want to do a engine swap once so that when the v8 goes I could just put the same v8 in, if you follow....less work.

Fairly cheap, tons of parts available and many conversions kits available would probably be the main reasons for the 350's.

If you got the coin look into a 1HZ Toyota diesel conversion. Early models are all mechanical so no wiring and computers to deal with and a load of power. Great gas mileage and if you think you need it thow a Safari Turbo system on her for some serious power. Not sure if it is a direct bolt-up to a '83 stock tranny.

You can find a 350 water pump at K-Mart. They are everywhere. There are tons of parts for everything you might want to do. The fuel injection is WAY simpler than Ford because GM wanted people to be able to diagnose stuff. Ford wants you to go to a factory trained tech. Lots of good trans options and transfer case adapters for the GM as well.
Ford also did stupid s*** like different firing orders on the 5.0 and the 5.0 H.O. That being said, i'd drop one in a Miata in a second. :D
I am not a fan of the 351 in either W or M form. The 302/5.0 was a great motor, as was the 4.9L/ 300 cid. Just my opinion, though.
i have 4 5.0Ls on stands in my shop right now. I didn't consider dropping one in my new 60 for more than a second. It must pass emissions, so i would have to use the Ford EFI. Yuk. Works fine. pain in the ass to tune for a custom application.
I have 5.7L TBI motors in my 40 and T-100. The 60 is getting either a 5.7 TBI or a 6.2L

Been talked about but... GM is the by far the easyest to get parts for, cheep, reliable, fuel injection is easy even up to 99 vortec. If you do go with GM dont waste your time/money on anything less then a TBI motor. Just my 02.

"humper" the low end or the 2F is very nice but carbs SUCK! TBI 2F if ya gotta stay Toyota.

I am doing similar rebuild on a 82 FJ60 , I am going one of 2 ways .. way 1 . Chevy 305 (free) Th400 tranny and a Advance Adapter kit to the existing Tcase . leaving stock axles and doing a SOA . Option 2 . Chevy 305 th400 , to a NP203 , dana 44 front and Chevey 14 bolt rear SOA

You might want to look into more transfer case options: Doubler 203 to Toyota case, Toyota case with crawler gears or others. The TH400 is built tough and was my choice as well, but first gear is 2.48 to 1 which is not low at all. I am running 4.11's with 33x10.5 BFG A/T's and can still feel the sluggishness of the tall first gear. Off road it's a different story with a tcase ratio over 4 to 1 thanks to the doubler but with only one tcase and stock gears in it you might find yourself having to wind up that 305 in places you would rather crawl.

my truck will be a seasonal only rig summer time trail runner , saw that thing on tieing the 203 to the 205, interesting stuff, Wish I had a 350 but a 305 for free is nice ...but only for a year , next winter a 350 will go in

With no crawling and running time trials you should have no problems at all with the gearing.

What axles are you running , was thinking on a D44 front and a 14 bolt rear and a SOA of course any tech tips you have feel free to send

Running my Cruiser axles and a set of 4.11's from the fronts of some older 40's. I don't know about putting in other axles but I'm sure someone around here does. I believe the 60 axles are stout and you already have them. I ran stock springs and threw in an add-a-leaf on each one and the ride is perfect. You can also re-arc your springs if you have stockers and they are flat.

How did you lnik the 203 to the yota tcase , my mechanic and I are wondering ....

There is an adapter available at Advance Adapters that will do it. Here is exactly what I did:

I sent a check for $508.00 to Jerry Nichols 210 Haversham Dr., Unit B, Colorado Springs, CO 80906. I guess he made the adapter and sells them to Advance Adapters or has the patent, I'm not sure. I got the adapter drop shipped from Advance Adapters. This was awhile back and maybe the price has come down or maybe you can just order from AA direct now. I had to have it so I got it and I haven't regretted it.

uh why? yota axles are probably at least as strong, if not stronger

I live in alaska , adn there aren't many fj60's or 40's up here , If i get out in the middle of nowhere and snap a birfield there aren't many I can find here

I ordered mine from www.PartsMikeParts.com He is cheaper than AA and it drop ships from them. It wasn't much more than $500, but i seem to remember that the split case was more expensive than the 4 speed case I have in my 40.

when i called advance , the adapter from chevy motor to yota tranny was 1100 bucks , but the adapter from chevy tranny to yota split tcaase was 583 . 71

What about the adapter from a NP203 trasnfer case to the Toy transfer case?
