Hey,

i was wondering why do some trailers have separate bed frames, i mean why not just mount the bed plate directly onto the chassis frame, is there any special reason?

In the old days of automotive engineering, virtually everything started with a separate frame. It was a matter as much of practice as one imposed by the limitations of materials and engineering calculations.

Eventually, with welding and other technologies in widespread use, the possibility of using the tub as an integral part of the strength previously provided mostly by the frame developed.

Trailers are pretty simple and mature technology, so this sort of thinking didn't get applied there so quickly as it was to many tow vehicles. The US M-series 1/4 ton trailers used separate frames, but went out of production before the use of the tub as frame came into use, as happened with the M101 CDN 1/4 ton trailers built in 1992. They do not have a separate frame, but are certainly the equal of their framed predecessors.

Another reason for separate frames is that these earlier trailers were also made as a chassis (frame) only, so other bodies could be installed on them.
