My 96 has a high pitched whine when under acceleration and goes away when I let off the gas. I was talking with a friend who used to work as a mechanic for Toyota and he says it's coming from the muffler. He mentioned it was a common issue with Land Cruisers and Previa vans. Has anyone else heard of this? Thanks.

I've got a mean whistle. Some people pay for a whistle that nice:

Pretty common issue. I haven't seen anyone definitively narrow it down, but most people seem to say it's the resonator. My resonator was cut off by the PO so that makes sense in my case.

Mine '95 had a lower pitch whine/grumble when accelerating that sounds like exhaust. I hope anyway!

Get a video and post it up. Exhaust whistle from these things is extremely common. Seems like it's just a symptom of an old exhaust.

Mine never "whistled" until I cut off the resonator (small little can at the very back) :hillbilly:

So when it's finally time to replace the exhaust, what is the recommendation? Should I stay with stock like with everything else or magnaflow, dynomax, etc...what are people's experiences with the aftermarket? I'm guessing performance gains will be minimal, but I don't want it to sound like a tuner car either.
