I'm thinking of buying a late '80s-early '90s wagon. Are any of these years better or worse than others? Is there anything I need to watch out for? I'm looking for something reliable and relatively easy to maintain. Any help is appreciated.

1988 thru 1990 = 62-series - leaf sprung, automatic, injected

1991-1992 = early 80-series - coil sprung, automatic, injected

1993-1997 = later 80-series - coil sprung, automatic, improved motor, possible factory diff locks.

Spend some search time in the Tech forums, lots of these things have been hashed thru....WHAT you are going to use the rig for is a determining factor....IMO, the kewlness is highest in the 62-series....

I've got a 1996 80-series and really enjoy it, primarily daily driver/tow rig duties....

Check the Tech....lots o info!

for the 80's, in 88 they went to fuel injected and auto tranny with 4.11 ratio (as opposed to 3.70)
when the 80series came around in the early nineties, they were dogs until 93ish

Thank you both for the info.

Woody--Strongly agree on the Kewlness issue. I'm looking for a rig that will (1) split daily driving duties with my '73 Porsche 911 and (2) be used as a paragliding/fishing/camping rig on roads the Porsche does not drive. I will use my wife's Sequoia for any towing that needs to be done.

Nuclearlemon--in what sense were the early 80 series dogs? Reliability or power?

power...the 1991-92 80-series share the same 3FE motor as the 1988-1990 FJ62 series, with the expense of added weight...

the 1993 model got a MUCH needed motor improvement....

check out http://www.sleeoffroad.com for their noobie guide to all things 80 :D

Sides dat 93 is quite possibly the best year ever for the FZJ-80. :D

The Newbie guide is very helpful. Thanks. Any good sources of similar info on the 62 series?
