Mud, sand snow, etc. have no effect on the XTs and older model XTRs. The new XTR, however, has a slimmer profile meaning the spindle is much closer to the cleats. Gunk does get caught in the gaps and I've noticed clipping out can be a bit slower, sometimes enough to get you hung up and fall over.
