Believe it or not, I've lived here for 12 years and never have had to purchase a car battery.

But now the battery in the 80 is failing, came with the car, so it's time to switch it up. I've read the threads on choosing a battery here, but are not really applicable to our market here in Edmonton.

I was recommended Rocky's Battery, Costco and Walmart (for a cost effective solution)

Have not heard good things about Battery World, options at Canadian Tire seemed priced a little bit higher than the Walmart counterparts which seemed quiet similar.

I'm between getting a cost effective option like the Walmart one or heading straight into AGM (for some of the camping in the summer)

What retailer and setup would you recommend on an 80?

cheers

I run optimas (from Walmart) and Costco batteries and haven't had any issues with either.

I've never run batteries from Costco, but I think that's where I would start if I lived closer to one of their stores.

How old are your Optimas Charla? I've read on Mud is that their quality has gone completely downhill over the last 5 or 10 years. (I think they were bought out and have moved production to Mexico from the US, and bean-counters have neutered the quality of the design to make them cheaper to produce)

The most recent battery I've picked up was from Canadian Tire, since it was convenient when the old one died (Camry). My 62 and F250 both have batteries from NAPA (manufactured by East Penn I believe).

This is what its looking like:

Walmart- Cheapest non AGM - $100 3 Year Warranty i think its 750 CCA
Rocky's - 149.00 - 5 year Warranty 1000 CCA, I think this is AGM but non verified, manufactured in Michigan USA
- I'm looking at this option because someone I know recommended it to me, they had a battery from these guys that lasted them 8 years.
Canadian Tire Eliminator (149.99) AGM

I'm pulling out of the Costco option since it's too much of a hassle to get a card, to go to the store, to see if I like the batteries and prices. Some people have had negative reviews on here too.

I've, within the last year, replaced the 2 I ran in Orange for 10+ years. Great batteries. Held charge, no problems. The current set haven't even made their way into the truck. I think the plow cruiser (Gordo) is holding one hostage still. I've got a set in the 77. Came with the truck and haven't had a problem although they're starting to hold less of a charge these days. The 73 ran Costcos for years and the 71 and 55 both currently run them.

We've been running Kirkland batteries (Costco) in our trailer, and vehicles within my family for years and have nothing but good things to say. I was actually there just the other night buying one for my LX.

Went with the Walmart brand (apparently made by Johnson Controls) 24 F at 99.99 plus tax. 790 CCA, the 149.99 AGM at Canadian Tire was a myth store vs. website kind of thing.
Walmart Battery has 5 years warranty, will confirm once I get home.

let's see how it holds up; but the return policy is pretty broad, so that's not a bad thing if it doesn't work out.

Have any of you 80s Owners had the weird Idle weird after disconnecting the positive terminal?

I've only disconnected the positive terminal 2, w/ 2 different batteries and when I turned it on the engine started doing a thing where it revved between 500 rpms to about 2000-3000, it seemed like an automatic thing. If you guys know why, or if it's never happened to you, let me know!

I changed my batteries and never had that. Hdj81

Yeah, I haven't had it happen on my other vehicles, and I did a search on it on the forum and couldn't find a response. However, I did a search on google, and while I didn't find a LC80 specific response... I found similar experiences at Tacoma world and one for MitsuEvos. Since a Lancruiser is basically a more kick ass Tacoma with some of the cool parts of an EVO, I'm deciding that this applies...

A few for other vehicles describing that because the positive terminal was disconnected the computer needs to do a re-assement of certain functions to "re-learn" the way the system is working.

"I assume someone will chime in if I am completely wrong. I believe when you disconnect your battery you also reset your computer for all your fuel and air mapping back to factory. You then have to rebuild the program by satisfying a variety of driving conditions like a 0 - 60mph acceleration, cursing at 60mph for X amount of time, and so on. Once you satisfy all the checks the truck should be back to normal."

The way it iddled seemed complete "systematic", so this makes sense.

Hunting idle sounds like a low coolant issue, bad TPS or IACV. On a gasser at least, I know nothing about diesels unless it's a 3B, then I know everything.

I've got a 4.5 efi. Issue is gone now. Symptom was the same last time I unhooked the + terminal. It has to be the system figuring something out

The ECM was re-learning it's settings. Perfectly normal.
