Getting ready to give our 2000 LX to our son. Just had it baselined with new timing belt, etc. Had a leak in a power steering pump hose and had to drive for a bit with lots of air in the system. Got that fixed, but there is now a slight knock in the pump. It is not leaking. He goes to school 9 hours from home. I am thinking of just buying a new one and throwing in the back as a spare. That way, if it goes, he can find a shop an hopefully get it replaced without having to get a hotel and spend the night.

Anyone know who made the OEM pump?

Bump. Any thoughts on this?

The best power steering pump is the oem one.

Assuming its actually the pump thats knocking, you can rebuild the oem one by ordering the parts you need ( vane rotor, bearings, seals, etc) or order the whole thing for ~$300

Thanks. Do you know whether this is a Aisin or Denso made pump?

Let me also ask this, I think I need a new pump because of the slight knocking I am hearing and now the pump is loud when you turn the wheels side to side. It doesn't squeal, but you definitely hear it now and you didn't before the air leak. Don't want to get stuck on the road. Is this something I can just wait to replace until it get's worse? Is it likely to go all the sudden, or will it be a slow decline? Thanks,

Did you remove all the air in the system after fixing the leak? Air in the system can cause noise but not necessarily indicate damage. Your pump may not be bad, but just noisy because of the cavitation caused by the air the needs to be bled out.

But if your pump really is bad, it’ll make quite a racket for awhile and might seize shredding the belt running the accessories. Not to mention make steering difficult which as I’m sure you know, would be unsafe.

Denso nor aisin sells the pumps. there are rebuilt ones available from aftermarket rebuilders. There are people on here parting out rigs that probably have a perfectly fine pump you could use.

Thanks. Yeah, we got all the air out. I will track down a low miles used one and throw it in the back as a spare. Appreciate the help!

Several of us have recently replaced the PS reservoir because in cold weather the fluid thickens up a bit and clogs the built-in screen that may already be fairly gummed up. Check that first as you may be getting fluid starvation and may be able to remove it and clean the screen at no further cost. Also, can you put a mechanic's stethoscope on the pump to verify that's where the sound is coming from? Also, for some folks, switching to synthetic ATF helped quiet a noisy steering rack.

All said, if you verify it's the pump go ahead and grab a spare, or maybe even do the replacement, as that would give you the peace of mind you're after.

Ordered a used one off of a rig with 131K miles. Will clean it up and throw it in the back in case it goes out on the road. Will keep my ear on it.
