None of that is difficult. If your replacement carb is from a vendor on this site maybe they can talk you through it.
The gasket(s) matter for the manifold, as do the condition of the studs. Use all new ones. The shop doesn't want to do it.

Yes, I have the proper gasket. I haven’t found a bolt/stud kit yet

Thank you CCOT for the nice quality, reasonably priced piece!

Finally got the dieseling fixed with a new mechanic I found. Had to adjust the timing and the carb. Also had him checked the idle rpm. Since I've had the truck, it always idled at 1400-1500 rpm. Now its running down at 8-900.

What was the charge on that?? I need to do it as well.

"Automotive shop rates vary widely by location and shop type, but typically fall between $100 to $200+ per hour, with many independent shops hovering around $120-$160/hr, while dealerships often charge more due to higher overhead, and specialized shops charge premium rates. Rates cover operating costs (rent, tools, insurance, training) and profit, often using a flat-rate system based on book time, not actual time."

My Sis backed into a light pole and put a small dent in the back hatch of her Sequoia and it wouldn't open. The shop got the hatch to work - didn't even put any touch up paint to prevent rusting. She ask about the drivers side passenger electric door lock - they wanted $1000 to fix the lock she declined. I googled a youtube vid to see what was involved, Ordered the lock motor and a plastic spoon/fork kit for the door panel clips from rockauto $100 delivered. Took me about 1/2 an hour to swap the part. Lock still works and it has been at least 10 years now. I kept the kit.

In my own experience , dealerships are a big joke. You can never speak with the mechanic whom does the work and, the admin people usually haven't ever changed a light bulb. I absolutely refuse to take my pig to a shop after having someone add a Heli coil on an exhaust manifold @ $200 an hr. I said well, I must be worth 150 an hr and going fwd, I'll hire myself. Peace out.

Similar experience with a buddy of mine recently. The CVT in his 2015 Subaru was throwing an error code for a solenoid and a shop and a dealer both quoted him around $2000+ because the solenoid isn’t a separate part number. They wanted to replace the entire valve body. He did some googling and Dorman sold the solenoid for $20. He came over to my shop and we got it done in about 3 hours. I’m no mechanic either - I know 2Fs and 60s but that’s about it. The Subaru job was easy.

I get it. Shops gotta keep their lights on and their staff has to eat. I’m 100% for folks making enough money to get by. But some of us can’t afford a shop haha.

It’s not efficient to work on 30,40,50 yo vehicles either. Lots of downtime waiting on parts and hard(expensive) to keep 100% of parts on hand. Very easy for plans to take a left turn. Has anyone tried to find a good 60 head lately….

The quote was from google search of "automotive shop rates" I thought $160 was in line - and the real plus is they fixed his issues and he seemed happy. My rig has been to a shop once - the PO called the Brake place (his friends shop) and sent me over to get new shoes and the wheel cylinders kitted plus the drums turned - which he paid for.

Once one of the pilot's at the FBO told my dad he was only a mechanic (actually he had soloed). My dad told him at least if he wrecked the plane, he could fix it.

There is WWII song that tells the newbe pilot not to fly to high or fly to fast - then he joins the straffer's and fly's to lowly and to slow

Shop quoted my wife $117 to change the engine air filter in her Highlander. Maybe almost understandable if that were the only thing. It would’ve been part of a larger batch of work however.

They now don’t get any business from us.

$30 for the Air filter (fair).
$87 for less than 2 minutes of work (nope).

That’s a little crazy.

We all have stories…that’s why we’re here…I had a recall on my diesel pickup. Dealership fixed it free but wanted to change the diesel fuel cartridge for $197.00 plus tax. I couldn't resist and told him..F that, I have a lift in my garage, you have no clue the amount of work I could get done for $25.00 in parts in that garage. While I smiled and picked up my key, 4 other people were standing in line behind me paying for $1000.00 + service bills.

I can fully understand the charges but I don’t agree to pay them unless warranted. We run a service business. Every two weeks is payroll..within that week is 941 taxes…every month is sales tax, fuel, wear maintenance on vehicles, insurances of all kinds, gps service subscriptions, vehicle leases and purchases, electric bill, phone bill, supplies, parts, office equipment and supplies, trash hauling and that list goes on and on every freakin’ month.

Gotta love it
