What years do you consider "late model"?

2003 and newer have both rear handles ( rack attachment points) facing down. 2002 and older have one handle facing down and one facing sideways requiring different brackets for rack attachment.

I'll toss in another variation. In my 98 LC, both handles face sideways.

Brought it in to Discount Tire and requested road force balancing. They couldn't get it right the first two times. Third times a charm I guess...so far. This shop (Market St. in Gilbert) happens to work on cars with bolt on spacers.

So far this week:

Had an excuse to get the SPC UCAs.

Found my spindle was worn enough to allow the inner bearing races to spin on it.

I used a large chisel to make three scores spaced apart equally where the bearings ride. Then I gently tapped them on with a hammer. This is a temporary fix until Duggy sells me his old spindles.

Interesting spindle damage. I'm wondering if caused by aftermarket bearings, breakaway preload set to light or both???

I go into shop while they balance. About half the tech don't no how to use the road force balancer.

Changed all fluids on my new (to me) 98 LX. It was a 1 owner vehicle with extensive dealer records and most fluids came out clear but I needed to be sure. The heater tees both broke in my hands. Glad I had spares on hand.

Too bad the tranny pan drain was stripped and I got to redrill and tap that. Other than that it was a piece of cake.
Most times the drain bolt just needs replacing. It's softer metal then pan threads. Try running a grease coat (catches metal particles) tap of correct OEM size into pan threads to clean up. Then install new OEM drain plug bolt with gasket (washer).

That would have been a good idea, although I wouldn't know if they were doing it right anyway :meh:. Even though I did look it up on Youtube and twice stayed at a Holiday Inn Express on our trip. Had to trust them and so far running fine.

I can honestly say they were like that when I got the vehicle. The grease was.... not so greasy anymore but the races and bearings themselves looked fine so I ran it like that.

Not sure if they were OEM bearings.

If the claw washer was badly scored you can bet bearings were set too loose. Chances are snap ring to flange gap was too wide as well. Which leads to flange and axle teeth wear.
Claw washer with medium scoring:

Flange teeth worn from loose bearing chatter & wide snap ring to flange gap. This creates a sawing action wearing on teeth. Give that N to D clunk.

Please post a pic of the Method rims, I just like to drool. Slee Slider steps are a neat unit too, you'll enjoy those.

Made a post mount for the LX painted to match:D to work with my Joto mount for my iPad navigation set up. I have had the same in my 80 series for years and it have proved to be the most solid mount I have ever seen. With the Joto mount you have all the location options.

When I dont have a passenger this is a nice location.

With a passenger I just swing over the center and still have access to all the LX controls with no interference to anyone.

View from the passengers side. Having use the Joto mount for several years its easy to see why it is a popular choice for police and emergency vehicles. I just move the head from vehicle post to vehicle post. The best part is its wife approved and doesnt get in her way at all.:)

Time to upgrade to the TrailGear spindle lock nut system and put an end to a wearing claw washers

I got rid of my drive line clunk going part time;)

Drove 1000 miles for vacation with 2 adults and 4 teenage girls, cargo box on top and bike on back, storage space was tight with the girls luggage. On Interstate averaged around 14.5mpg driving 75-80, back highways in the 50-60mph averaged over 16mpg.

View attachment 1288358 View attachment 1288360 Had my Cruiser shuttled to Judith Landing after a 50+ Mile float down the Missouri River out here in Northern Montana.

I had to then drive my brother and his wife back to their Prius because it would have been awful on that road.

4 peeps, one 115 lb. German Shepherd, gear on roof. And two rafts in tow and all my gear for a month. AHC performed fine with the help of airbags. Love my LC.

Air bags + AHC? Cool idea! I am guessing you had to sag the rear axle to get the coils out enough to insert the air bags? Did you replace the coils while in there?

Jason,

I will have these available once I get moved to Spokane (60, 80 and 100series). I have a few more things to change and add. Flat locks, door configuration, internal finish, etc..

There are a couple others out there so, until my design is finalized I will hold tight on releasing any pictures. Just want you all to know I'm working on this and it will be a nice alternative with a few twists.

Jason

Can't wait to see these Jason! Good luck with the move.
